Egypt in October: Warm Sea, Walkable Temples, Week by Week

October is the hinge month: the Red Sea is at its warmest while Luxor and Aswan finally become comfortable to walk.

Egypt in October: Warm Sea, Walkable Temples, Week by Week

The short answer: yes, and the second half is better

October is one of the best months to visit Egypt, with one honest caveat: it is two different months. The first week still feels like summer inland, and the last ten days are close to ideal. The Red Sea is at or near its warmest of the year throughout. If you are coming for the beach, any week works. If you are coming for temples, tombs and the Pyramids, aim for the middle or end of the month, or accept an early start and a long midday break in the first week.

The trade-offs are less glamorous. Prices and demand climb as half-term holidays arrive, the days are noticeably shorter than in July, and Luxor's midday sun is still strong. Nothing here should put you off. It just means October rewards a bit of planning.

Egypt in October, week by week

PeriodRed Sea coast (Hurghada)Luxor and AswanBest use
First weekHot, sunny, sea very warmPast the worst of summer, but midday is still hardBeach and boat days; Luxor only with a very early start
Second weekWarm days, a little more breeze, sea still warmMornings pleasant, early afternoon still hotMix of boat days and one big culture day
Third weekComfortable in the day, cooler eveningsSightseeing feels normal rather than enduredLuxor, Cairo and the balloon flight
Last weekPleasant days, evenings that want a light layerClose to ideal, with cool mornings and eveningsAnything; this is the sweet spot, and also the busiest

A few notes behind the table. On the Red Sea coast the heat never becomes a problem in October. It is a warm-to-hot beach month with the fierce edge of summer gone. Wind is the variable: some days are breezy, and a breezy day on a boat feels cooler than the thermometer suggests. Inland, the change is much bigger. The early-October feel is still summer, while by the final week you can stand in a temple courtyard at midday without counting the minutes until shade. Clocks in Egypt may change at the end of October, so check your phone and your pickup time the night before.

The sea: why beach readers should book a boat day

October is when the Red Sea has soaked up the whole summer. You do not need a wetsuit, you can stay in the water for a long time, and the reefs of Giftun Island National Park are at their most comfortable. If you are staying around Hurghada, this is the month to spend a day or two properly on the water rather than just on a hotel sun lounger. For a wider look at the coast, our Hurghada Marina guide explains where most boat days start.

A short, private option: Orange Bay

If you want the famous white sandbar without a full day, the private speedboat trip to Orange Bay takes four hours from an 08:00 pickup. It is a private booking, so your own party sets the pace. It is about 20 minutes by speedboat from Hurghada Marina, followed by an optional snorkel stop over a Giftun reef and roughly two hours on the beach. Snorkel gear, soft drinks, fruit and the nature-reserve fees are included. Lunch is not, and the Orange Bay entry ticket is paid on the island. Bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. In late October, take a light layer for the ride back, because speedboats are fast and spray is cool.

The unflattering part: Orange Bay is photogenic for a reason, and it is popular. A private boat helps you get there quickly and leave on your own schedule, but it will not make the beach empty, especially in the school-holiday weeks.

A full day: Mahmya Island

For a slower, longer day, the Mahmya Island beach and snorkelling day runs eight hours from an 08:00 pickup. This one is a shared small-group tour, with up to eight guests. The boat ride out to Mahmya takes around an hour and a quarter. Then you have sun loungers and umbrellas, a snorkel trip from the island towards the Sabina reef area, a buffet lunch at the island restaurant, and a second snorkel stop from the boat after lunch before the return in the late afternoon. Entry, nature-reserve fees and snorkel gear are included. It suits families and people who would rather lie on a beach than swim much.

Two practical points that are easy to miss. No drinks are served on the boat apart from a small bottle of water at the marina, so bring your own. There are also no photographers on board, so bring a camera or a waterproof phone case. If you are weighing other boat days, our piece on Paradise Island and what private actually buys is a useful comparison.

Luxor and Aswan: the heat penalty falls

The case for October in Upper Egypt is simple. In July and August, Luxor can be a test of endurance, and many visitors skip the middle of the day entirely. By October, Luxor and Aswan have dropped out of the very hottest range. Midday is still hard in the first two weeks, but from the third week it becomes properly walkable. Shade, a hat and water still matter, and the Valley of the Kings tombs are stuffy when they are busy, but you are no longer fighting the climate. If you have been putting off Luxor, this is the month to book it.

The classic day: Karnak and the West Bank

The Luxor day trip from Hurghada leaves at 05:30 and has about four hours of driving each way across the Eastern Desert, 14 hours in total. You see Karnak, lunch on the West Bank, the Valley of the Kings (three tombs are included), Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon. It runs in two formats: private by car or minivan with no shopping stops, or a shared small-group tour of up to eight guests on an air-conditioned bus. Tutankhamun's and Seti I's tombs are not included, and a Nile motorboat ride is an optional extra.

Be realistic: this is a long day, and the schedule puts the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple in the early afternoon. In the first week of October that is the hot part of the day. From the third week onwards it is fine. Our Luxor day trip packing list covers what to wear and carry.

The sunrise version: balloon, tombs and Karnak

If you can face a midnight pickup, the Luxor sunrise hot-air balloon day reverses the order. You drive through the night, float for about 45 minutes over the West Bank at dawn, then walk the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon in the cool morning. Lunch is around 10:00 and Karnak follows at about 12:00, with the return drive to Hurghada afterwards. It is a private tour, and you are back at your hotel around 17:00. It is 17 hours in total and you sleep in a vehicle, so do not pretend it is relaxing.

October is a good month for it because the mornings are cooler and the ground-level temperature is more comfortable. A warm layer for the flight is still a good idea. The honest caveat is that balloon flights depend on the weather, particularly wind. If the operator cancels, the balloon portion is refunded, but you should not build a trip around a single morning. Our honest guide to the Luxor balloon flight explains what to expect, including the early start.

Cairo and Giza

Giza is mostly open-air and has little shade, so the heat penalty applies there too, and it also falls in October. The Pyramids plateau in the morning light of a late-October day is a very different experience from the same walk in August. If you are staying on the Red Sea coast, Cairo in a day by plane avoids the long road trip. It is a private tour with an early 04:00 hotel pickup, a short domestic flight, a morning at the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, lunch, the Tutankhamun collection at the Grand Egyptian Museum, and a panoramic drive. Expect to be back late in the evening. You need your passport for the flights.

It is a dense 17 hours with a lot of walking, and the Giza plateau can be busy. If you want to understand the museum choice before you commit, read the GEM or the old Egyptian Museum.

The Sun Festival at Abu Simbel, 22 October

On 22 October, and again on 22 February, the rising sun travels the length of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel and lights the inner sanctuary. It draws crowds, and the dawn queue and the long drive in the dark are part of the experience. Helios does not run a featured Abu Simbel trip in this guide. If this date is the reason for your trip, read what dawn at the Sun Festival really looks like before you plan around it, and book accommodation well ahead.

What October costs you

  • Prices and crowds. Demand rises through half-term. Boats, popular temples and the Sun Festival are busier in the last two weeks. Book the trips you care about early rather than the night before.
  • Shorter days. Sunsets come noticeably earlier than in summer, so long day trips finish in the dark more often. That matters on the road back from Luxor.
  • The first week inland. Do not expect Luxor to be gentle in the first days of the month.
  • Wind. A breezy sea can make a boat ride feel cool. Bring a layer.
  • Families. School holidays are the main reason prices and crowds change. Our guide to Egypt with children helps with choosing activities by age.

How to put a week together

For a beach week with some culture, spend the first days by the sea, add a boat day mid-week, and place Luxor or Cairo in the second half of your stay. If your dates fall in the first week of October, pick the sunrise option for Luxor or accept the heat for a few hours. If your dates fall in the last week, the culture days become easy and the sea is still warm. Pack light layers for evenings, sun protection for every day, and good walking shoes; what to pack for Egypt goes through it by season and trip type.

Egypt in October FAQ

Is it still hot in Egypt in October?

On the Red Sea coast it is warm to hot but comfortable, and the sea is warm. In Luxor and Aswan the first week or two still has strong midday heat, while the second half of the month is much easier. Cairo is milder than the south.

Can you swim and snorkel in the Red Sea in October?

Yes. The sea is at or near its warmest of the year, so you generally do not need a wetsuit. On boat days a breeze can make the return trip feel cool, so bring a light layer.

Which part of October is best for Luxor?

The last ten days or so. Early in the month, choose the sunrise balloon day, where the tombs come in the cool morning, or accept a hot afternoon on the standard day trip.

Is October busy and more expensive?

It gets busier and more expensive as half-term holidays begin, particularly in the second half of the month. Book your boat days, balloon flight and any Sun Festival plans early.

Are the Helios Luxor and Cairo trips private?

It depends on the trip. The Luxor sunrise balloon day and Cairo in a day by plane are private. The Luxor day trip runs both privately and as a shared small group of up to eight guests, so choose the format when you book.
