Paradise Island: the half-day boat trip, and what private actually buys

Four hours, your own speedboat, and the afternoon back

Paradise Island is the one Hurghada boat day that does not take a whole day. Four hours, a private speedboat, and a group of exactly the people you came with — it is the answer for anybody who wants the sea without giving up the rest of the afternoon.

What the speedboat actually changes

Almost everything, and not in the way the word suggests. The point is not going fast for its own sake.

A group day boat is slow, so a large part of the day is transit — an hour out, an hour back, and the schedule belongs to the boat. A speedboat cuts that to a fraction, which is the entire reason four hours is enough. What you buy is not speed; it is the hours the crossing would have eaten.

And it is genuinely private

Your group has the boat and the guide. Nobody else is aboard, nobody else's schedule applies, and there is no waiting for the last of forty people to come up the ladder.

In practice that changes the day more than the island does. You stop where you want, you stay as long as you want, and if the reef at the first stop is better than expected you simply stay in the water instead of being called back because a timetable says so.

The island

White sand and turquoise shallows, and it is genuinely pretty — this is the island that looks like the photographs. It is more developed than a bare sandbar and much less so than Orange Bay; there is somewhere to sit and somewhere to be in the shade, but nobody is running a beach club at you.

Because the boat is yours, you arrive and leave when it suits you, which on a busy day is the difference between sharing the sand with two boats and sharing it with fifteen.

The stops are not fixed. You can do one and spend the rest on the beach, or three and barely land, and the guide will steer that. Equipment, life jackets, soft drinks and fruit are aboard.

That flexibility is most useful for mixed groups. One strong swimmer who wants a proper reef and one who wants to stand in the shallows are hard to satisfy on a scheduled boat and easy to satisfy on your own.

Who it is for

Couples, for whom a hundred-person party cruiser is the opposite of the holiday.
Families with young children — four hours is roughly the length of a small child's patience, and eight is not.
Anyone on a short trip. Half a day at sea leaves the other half for Hurghada, a museum, or simply the pool.
Nervous swimmers, because nobody is watching and waiting.

How many people a private boat means

"Private" is priced per boat rather than per seat, which has a consequence worth doing the arithmetic on: for two people it is a treat, for six it is often close to what six seats on a group boat would cost, and for eight it is usually cheaper per head than the alternative.

So the people it suits least, financially, are couples — and they are also the people who value it most. Both things are true, and it is worth knowing which trade you are making rather than discovering it at the end.

What is included, and what is not

Aboard: the boat, the guide, snorkelling equipment, life jackets, soft drinks and fruit. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are arranged.

Not aboard: a full lunch. Four hours does not have a meal in the middle of it, which is part of why it is four hours — so eat before, or plan to eat after. Guests who assume lunch is coming are the ones who finish the trip hungry and slightly annoyed, and it is entirely avoidable.

Paradise, Nemo or Eden

Paradise — shortest, private, most flexible, costs the most per hour and buys back the afternoon.
Nemo — the value day: eight hours, a bigger boat, more people, the clownfish reef.
Eden — eight hours, a quiet sandbar, shallow water and a long anchor. The one for beginners.

The honest summary: if the budget is the constraint, Nemo. If crowds are the constraint, Eden. If time is the constraint, Paradise.

The speedboat and seasickness

Worth knowing, because it cuts both ways. A speedboat is out and back quickly, so there is far less time to feel unwell — but it slams rather than rolls, and on a choppy day that is harder on backs and necks than a slow cruiser is.

If anybody in the group has a back problem, say so when you book: the crew can take it slower, and a speedboat driven gently is a completely different ride.

When to go

Mornings are calmer than afternoons on this coast almost all year, and a short trip benefits from that more than a long one — you are choosing a four-hour window rather than riding out whatever the day does.

April to June and September to November are the best months for the water. In high summer the early slot is worth taking simply for the heat. In winter the water drops to around twenty-one or twenty-two degrees, and a shorty wetsuit is worth asking for.

Booking it

Ask for the morning slot unless you have a reason not to, give us the number of people when you enquire rather than after — it decides the boat — and say if anyone is a non-swimmer, pregnant, or has a back problem, because all three change how the crew runs the day.

In high season the private boats go first, so a day or two of notice is worth more here than on a group trip where there is always another seat.

If you only do one boat trip

Most people on a week in Hurghada do exactly one day at sea, and the choice is usually made on price. It is worth making it on what you actually want instead.

If the answer is "swim on a nice beach and get some sun without a crowd", this is the right one and the short format is a feature. If the answer is "see as much reef as possible", it is the wrong one — you want the full day, two long stops and somewhere shallow to practise. And if the answer is "the children need to be entertained and then need to stop", four hours is almost exactly the right length and eight is a mistake you only make once.

The honest case against it

You get less sea. Four hours is four hours, and a full-day boat with two long reef stops and a proper anchor will show you more underwater than this does.

It also costs more per hour, which is the trade: a private boat for six is never going to price like a seat on a boat for sixty. If your week has an empty day in it and the budget matters more than the clock, take the full day instead and spend the difference on something else.
