Private or Shared Guided Day in the UAE: How to Choose

Group size, flexibility, meeting points and the questions worth asking before you book a guided day in the Emirates.

Private or Shared Guided Day in the UAE: How to Choose

The short answer

Choose a shared tour if you are travelling as a couple or solo, want the classic experience at a lower cost per person, and can live with a fixed schedule. Choose private if you are a family or a group of friends, need your own pace, or have a flight, a child's nap or a prayer-time constraint to work around.

The catch is that you do not always get to choose. Each Helios trip in the UAE runs in the formats listed on its page, and they differ. Here is what that looks like.

What shared really means

On a shared tour you travel on the operator's timetable with people you have not met. The upside is cost and atmosphere. The downside is that nobody will stop the vehicle because you want a longer photo break, and the slowest person to reach the meeting point sets the departure time.

The Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening is the clearest example. The shared format is listed for up to 15 guests, while the trip description says each shared four-wheel drive carries no more than six. That is worth confirming when you book, because group size and vehicle size are different questions. The day runs about seven hours. It covers hotel pickup, 30 to 45 minutes of dune driving and a sandboarding stop. Then comes a camp with camels, henna, falcon photos and a buffet dinner with live shows.

It is a polished, well-worn format, and it suits first-time visitors and families with children aged three and over. It is not a quiet wilderness experience. Expect other groups at the camp, and expect a bumpy ride if you are prone to motion sickness.

What private buys you, and what it does not

Private means your party only: no strangers in the vehicle and more say over the rhythm of the day. That is useful for mixed-ability families or anyone who dislikes waiting. The private format of the red dunes safari is priced considerably higher per person than the shared one, so check the trip page for current rates before deciding.

Private does not mean unlimited flexibility. On the Dubai Jet Ski Ride by Burj Al Arab, which only runs privately, you still follow an escort rider at a steady pace and stop on the water for photos of Burj Al Arab. It is a short, active break rather than a free ride: you choose 30 or 60 minutes, with one jet ski for one or two riders. Start times run from 08:00 to 13:00, and the morning slots avoid the midday heat.

Multi-day: the shared case for a first visit

The Seven Days Across the Emirates tour is a small-group, shared trip for up to 15 guests, by road from Abu Dhabi to Dubai. A guide accompanies you throughout. It includes a heritage safari in a vintage four-wheel-drive and a night in a luxury desert dome. Lunches and drinks are not included, nor are flights or visa fees where your nationality needs one.

The trade-off is plain: you give up control of the pace in return for not planning anything. If you would rather base yourself in one city, read our guide to an Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai first.

Meeting points and timing

  • Seven-day tour: you are met at Abu Dhabi airport and dropped at Dubai airport on day seven. The first start time is 08:00.
  • Red dunes safari: hotel pickup is part of the day, and the itinerary allows about 45 minutes each way. Departures are at 11:00 or 14:30, and the fire show and stargazing are listed for the 14:30 departure. For more on the night sky, see our Dubai desert stargazing guide.
  • Jet ski: no hotel transfers. You make your own way to the watersports base, so allow for Dubai traffic.

Heat shapes all of this, especially in summer. Our best time to visit Dubai guide covers the seasons.

Questions to ask any supplier

  1. How many guests are in the vehicle, and how many are in the whole group?
  2. Where exactly do we meet, and is hotel pickup included for my hotel?
  3. What happens if we are late, or if the weather or sea conditions change?
  4. Which meals, drinks and entries are included, and which are extra?
  5. What is the cancellation policy?
  6. What are the age, health and clothing rules for the activity?

What to verify before you book

Check the trip page for the current format, price and start times, since these can change. Confirm visa rules for your nationality with official government sources. Check any attraction's opening hours and dress code on its official site; our Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque guide and Dubai packing list help with what to wear.

FAQ

Is a private tour always better?

No. It is better for families, tight schedules and anyone who wants control of the pace. For a couple or solo traveller who enjoys company, a shared tour gives the same sights at a lower cost per person.

Which Helios UAE trips can I book privately?

The Dubai Jet Ski Ride by Burj Al Arab is private only, and the Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening has both private and small-group formats. The seven-day tour is listed only as a small group, shared.

How big is a shared group?

The shared formats are listed for up to 15 guests. The red dunes trip description also says shared vehicles carry no more than six, so confirm both numbers when you book.

Do I need to arrange my own transport?

It depends on the trip. The seven-day tour covers transfers and road transport, and the red dunes safari includes hotel pickup. The jet ski ride does not include hotel transfers, so you meet at the base.
