Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening: A Realistic Day

How to build a day in Dubai around a seven-hour desert trip, which departure to pick, and what to do before you go.

Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening: A Realistic Day

Is the Red Dunes Safari worth a day in Dubai?

Yes, if you want the classic desert outing in a single, low-effort block: a 4x4 dune drive, a camel ride, and a barbecue dinner with live shows. It suits first-timers, couples and families with children aged three and over. It is not for anyone who wants silence, solitude or a wilderness trek. The camp is lively and organised.

The Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening runs about 7 hours by road, with hotel pickup and drop-off. It leaves Dubai and returns to it, so treat it as a day trip into the desert, not a sight in the city. Start times are 11:00 and 14:30.

Which start time to choose

The 14:30 departure is the better fit for most people. It leaves your morning free, and only this departure includes the fire show and telescope stargazing. On a 7-hour trip it should bring you back to your hotel roughly in the late evening.

The 11:00 departure suits families with young children who need an earlier night, or anyone with a late-evening flight or plans. The trade-off is that you lose the fire show and stargazing, and it leaves very little of your morning. If the night sky is what you want, read our guide to Dubai desert stargazing before you decide.

A realistic day, in order

Morning: stay in the city, keep it light

With a 14:30 start, spend the morning on foot rather than in a mall queue. The old Al Fahidi neighbourhood and the Dubai Creek waterfront are the easiest independent options, and a crossing by traditional abra boat is short and cheap by Dubai standards. Be back at your hotel well before pickup. Drivers collect several parties, so the pickup stage alone takes about 45 minutes.

Pickup and the red dunes

You travel in a shared, air-conditioned 4x4. The description says no more than six guests per vehicle. The driver then takes you across the red sand for 30 to 45 minutes before a sandboarding stop. Expect bumps and sudden dips. If you get carsick, say so early and sit near the front. Sandboarding is fun for a few runs, but the climb back up soft sand is tiring in the heat.

The desert camp

You arrive to Arabic coffee, dates and sweets, then spend about 1 hour 45 minutes at the camp. There is a short camel ride, which you can repeat, plus camel feeding, falcon photos, henna and shisha. This is the touristy part, and it is meant to be. Treat it as an entertaining introduction rather than an authentic Bedouin encounter.

Dinner and shows

The buffet mixes Emirati, Moroccan and Arabian dishes with barbecue, followed by horse, camel and Yola dance performances. Water and soft drinks are unlimited. Alcohol is not included, and neither are tips or personal expenses. Vegetarians should ask about options when booking, because the supplied trip details do not specify them.

The drive back

Allow about 45 minutes to return to your hotel. After dinner you will be tired, so do not schedule anything afterwards.

Private or shared?

Helios runs this trip in two formats. The small-group version is shared, with up to 15 guests. The private version is just your party, whatever its size. Shared is the cheaper way in. Private suits families with a toddler, or a group that wants its own pace. Check the page for current rates.

What costs extra, and what to wear

A quad bike ride can be booked as a separate option, as can an optional 20-minute horse ride. Neither is part of the base trip. Wear light, loose clothing and closed shoes, and bring a layer if you take the later departure, since the desert cools after dark. For more on packing, see our Dubai packing list. The season matters too: Dubai in October is still hot by day, and our month-by-month Dubai guide shows when evenings turn comfortable.
