Dubai in October: How Hot Is It Really, and What to Plan
The days are still warm and humid early in the month, but the evenings, the sea and the desert at sunset make it a good time to go.
Is Dubai too hot in October? Not too hot to enjoy, but still properly hot at midday, especially in the first two weeks. Expect daytime highs in the mid-30s Celsius early in the month, easing a few degrees by the end. The air is humid, the sun is strong, and the pavement and sand hold heat well into the afternoon. The real gain is the evening: after sunset it is warm and pleasant, and for the first time since spring you can sit outside without bargaining with the weather. The sea is also very warm, closer to a bath than a refreshment.
So go if you plan the day around the heat: mornings and evenings outdoors, the middle of the day in air-conditioning or by a pool. The second half of October is noticeably kinder than the first. If you are choosing autumn holiday dates and are flexible, later is better. If your dates are fixed early in the month, you can still have a very good trip. Just do not expect a cool-weather holiday, and do not schedule a long walking tour at 13:00.
What October in Dubai actually feels like
Summer in Dubai is a different proposition, with heat and humidity that make being outside at midday a short, unpleasant errand. October is the transition. The peak of that heat has passed, but nobody has told the midday sun. In the first days of the month the humidity near the coast can be sticky enough that a ten-minute walk between a car and a mall feels like effort. By the last week, mornings and evenings can feel genuinely comfortable, and the city begins to look like it does in winter: terraces filling up, people on the beaches after work.
Some honest specifics for planning:
- Midday: hot and bright throughout the month. Shade helps less than you hope because of the humidity. Plan indoor time or a pool.
- Late afternoon: the heat starts to loosen, and the light turns golden. This is when outdoor plans begin to make sense.
- Evening: warm and easy. Dinner outside, waterfront walks and the desert after dark all work.
- Sea: very warm, around 30°C or a little more early in the month. It is lovely to float in, though it will not cool you down much.
- Rain: rare. Autumn can bring the occasional cloudy day, but October is mostly dry and sunny.
This article is about the single month. If you are still deciding between months, our best time to visit Dubai guide covers the full year, so I will not repeat it here.
What becomes comfortable first
In any October, the order in which things become pleasant is predictable. Start with the activities that happen when the sun is low or the car is air-conditioned.
| Time of day | Early October | Late October |
|---|---|---|
| Early morning (before about 9:00) | Warm but manageable for short outdoor stretches | Pleasant for walking and water sports |
| Midday | Hot and humid: indoors, pool, air-conditioned sights | Still hot, but shorter outdoor stops are fine |
| Late afternoon | Heat easing; good for the desert | Comfortable; the best time for the dunes |
| Evening | Warm and easy; the main reward | Very pleasant outside |
In short: evenings first, then mornings, and midday last. The plans below follow that order.
Why a sunset desert evening beats a midday one
The desert is the place where timing matters most. Sand absorbs heat all day and releases it slowly. At noon in early October it is bright, flat-lit and punishing: photographs look washed out, and the dunes give you no shade. An hour or two before sunset, everything changes. The light turns copper, the dunes cast long shadows that give them shape, and the sand has begun to give up its heat. After dark, the camp is warm rather than hot, and on a clear night you can see stars, which is far easier at an evening camp than in the city.
It is also simply a better experience. Riding a camel or driving over dunes while the sky goes orange and pink is what people picture when they book a desert trip. Doing it at 12:00 means you get the same ride with worse light and more sweat. For a fuller comparison of morning, evening and overnight formats, see our Dubai desert safari guide.
The calm option: the sunset camel or horse ride
If you want time in the saddle rather than a dune drive, the Dubai Sunset Camel or Horse Ride and Dinner is built around the ride itself. Pickup is at 13:45 or 15:30, and the whole outing lasts about six hours. You choose a 40-minute camel ride, a 40-minute horse ride, or 20 minutes on each, in the low evening light. Afterwards you move on to a camp in the red dunes for live performances and a barbecue buffet dinner.
Two things to know. It runs as a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests, and it does not include a dune drive in a four-wheel drive. If you want the roller-coaster feeling, look at the next option. If you want something calm, with couples and families in mind, this is the better October evening.
The busier option: the red dunes safari and BBQ evening
The Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening is the classic: a 30 to 45 minute drive across the red sand, a sandboarding stop, then a desert camp with Arabic coffee and dates, camel rides and feeding, henna or shisha, a falcon to hold, a buffet of Emirati, Moroccan and Arabian dishes with barbecue, and live shows. It lasts about seven hours and suits first-time visitors, couples and families with children aged three and over.
It runs with two start times, 11:00 and 14:30, and in October the choice matters. The 11:00 departure means the dune drive and camp activities happen in the hottest part of the day. The 14:30 departure puts the dunes in the afternoon light, and it is the one that includes the fire show and telescope stargazing. In October I would choose 14:30 every time. The 11:00 slot is for people whose flights or other plans leave no choice.
This trip is bookable in two formats: as a shared small group of up to 15 guests, or as a private tour for just your party, whatever its size. The private format costs considerably more per person than the shared one, so it is worth it mainly if you want the pace and the vehicle to yourselves.
The early-morning option: oasis camel caravan and breakfast
If you would rather see the desert in the morning, the Dubai Oasis Camel Caravan and Breakfast starts at 08:00 or 08:15 and lasts about five hours. You drive inland to an oasis in a protected desert reserve, ride a camel caravan at walking pace, visit a recreated Bedouin village, try on traditional dress, and sit down to a Bedouin-style breakfast. It is a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests.
An honest note: in early October the morning is gentler than the afternoon, but it is not cool. The early start keeps you out of the worst heat, and the pace is slow. It suits early risers and photographers. If you want the sunset and the stars, though, the evening trips are the better October choice.
Seeing the city without suffering
Dubai in October is still an excellent city break. The trick is to match each sight to the right time of day.
The Dubai City Tour from the Creek to Jumeirah is a half-day guided tour of about five hours. It runs in an air-conditioned vehicle through Palm Jumeirah, a photo stop at Jumeirah Beach for the Burj Al Arab, a short walk along Dubai Marina, the Museum of the Future, the Blue Mosque, Al Fahidi, an abra across the Creek and the gold and spice souks. Departures are at 08:00, 08:45, 09:15, 14:15 and 14:45, and it runs both as a shared small group of up to 15 guests and as a private tour.
Choose a morning departure in early October. Several of the stops are outdoors, and the Marina walk and the souk lanes feel very different at 09:30 than at 15:30. The afternoon departures are more realistic from the middle of the month onwards. Bring water, a hat, and clothes you can wear inside the Blue Mosque, where shoulders and knees need to be covered. Our Dubai packing list covers what works for the city, the mosque and the desert, and if you want to explore the old quarter at your own pace, there is a guide to Old Dubai on foot.
The sea: a morning jet ski
The warm water is one of October's quiet advantages. The Dubai Jet Ski Ride by Burj Al Arab is a one-hour outing from a watersports base on the coast. You drive the jet ski yourself, following an escort rider along the shore, with stops on the water for photos of Burj Al Arab. You can choose 30 or 60 minutes, and one jet ski carries one or two riders. It is booked as a private tour, and hotel transfers are not included, so you meet at the base.
Start times run from 08:00 to 13:00. In October, take one of the first slots. On the water the sun is strong and there is no shade, and you will want the morning rather than the 13:00 departure. It suits confident beginners, couples and friends who want a short active break.
What is not worth it in October
- A long outdoor walking day at noon, especially in the first two weeks. Split the day instead.
- A midday desert trip when an afternoon or evening one is available. The light is worse and the sand is hotter.
- Planning the beach as a cooling-off tool. The sea is lovely, but it is warm. Shade, a pool and air-conditioning do the cooling.
- Packing for autumn. You need summer clothes, sun protection and one light layer for heavily air-conditioned malls and restaurants.
A simple way to put it together
For a few days, the pattern is straightforward. Take a morning for the city or the water, spend the middle of the day indoors, and keep a late afternoon and evening for the desert. Our 3-day Dubai itinerary shows how to sequence it, and if you plan to go up the tallest building, the Burj Khalifa guide explains which time of day works best. If you are travelling with children, the Dubai with kids guide covers heat and pacing by age.
Dubai in October FAQ
Is Dubai too hot in October?
At midday, yes, particularly in the first half of the month, when highs are in the mid-30s and humidity is noticeable. Mornings and evenings are pleasant, and by the end of the month the whole day feels easier. If you plan around the heat, it is a good month to visit.
Is the sea warm enough to swim in October?
Yes. The Gulf is very warm in October, around 30°C or slightly more early in the month. It is comfortable to swim in, but it will not cool you down much.
Is October a good time for a desert safari?
Yes, if you book an afternoon or evening departure. On the red dunes safari, the 14:30 start is the one to choose, because the dunes are in softer light and the evening is comfortable. A midday desert trip is the least pleasant way to do it.
Should I go in early or late October?
Late October is more comfortable, with slightly lower temperatures and easier evenings. Early October is still hot and humid, though it works well if you plan around mornings and evenings.
Do I need to pack warm clothes?
Not really. Bring light summer clothing, sun protection and a thin layer for air-conditioned interiors. For mosque visits, pack clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
