Dubai Desert Safari: Morning, Evening or Overnight?
What each safari really involves, how dune driving feels, what to wear, and who is better off choosing the calm option
Almost everyone who visits Dubai asks the same question within a day of arriving: which desert safari should we do? The answer depends less on the desert, which is the same red sand whichever slot you book, and more on you. How much time you have, how you handle a bumpy ride, whether you are travelling with small children, and whether a dinner under the stars matters more than being back at the pool by lunchtime. This guide walks through the three main formats, morning, evening and overnight, then covers dune driving honestly, what to wear and bring, and who should skip the 4x4 altogether.
The three formats at a glance
Every Dubai desert safari is built from the same parts: a drive out of the city, time on the dunes, a few traditional activities and the drive back. What changes is the time of day and how long you stay.
- Morning safari: about four hours, early pickup, dune drive, sandboarding and a camel ride, with coffee and dates but no meal. The afternoon stays free.
- Evening safari: the classic choice, roughly seven hours including transfers. Dune drive in the afternoon, then a desert camp with a buffet dinner, barbecue and live shows.
- Overnight safari: you stay at the camp, sleep in a tent and wake for sunrise. The longest and calmest way to see the desert, and the only one that shows you the dunes at dawn.
There is also a fourth option that many guides leave out: a camp evening with no dune driving at all. We come back to it below, because for some travellers it is simply the right answer.
Morning safari: the desert without a late night
A morning safari suits early risers, families with younger children and anyone with plans for the afternoon. On our Dubai Dune Safari with Sandboarding and Camels, you choose a pickup slot between 07:00 and 09:30. The driver can arrive up to 45 minutes after the booked time depending on where you are staying, so it pays to be in the lobby on time and then be patient.
Out in the red dunes you start in an air-conditioned tent with Arabic coffee, tea, dates and cold drinks. Then comes the main event: 30 to 45 minutes of dune driving in a shared, air-conditioned four-wheel drive. Afterwards the driver stops so you can sandboard down a slope, and the morning ends with a short camel ride and the chance to hold a falcon for a photo. The whole trip takes about four hours from pickup.
What a morning safari does not include is a meal. If you picture a long dinner by lantern light, this is not that trip. What it gives you instead is softer light, cooler air and a free afternoon.
Staying in Abu Dhabi? Our Abu Dhabi Morning Desert Safari follows the same idea: pickup at 07:00 or 07:15 from central Abu Dhabi hotels or the Port Zayed cruise terminal, a 30 to 40 minute dune drive, sandboarding and a short camel ride, back in the city before midday. Breakfast is not included, so eat something light before you leave.
Evening safari: dunes, dinner and a camp
The evening safari is what most people mean when they say desert safari. Our Dubai Red Dunes Safari and BBQ Evening runs with two departures, 11:00 and 14:30, each taking about seven hours including transfers. You travel in a shared four-wheel drive with no more than six guests, spend 30 to 45 minutes on the dunes and stop to sandboard.
At the camp you are welcomed with Arabic coffee, dates and sweets. You can ride and feed the camels, try henna or shisha and hold a falcon. Dinner is a buffet of Emirati, Moroccan and Arabian dishes with barbecue, vegetarian dishes included, followed by a horse show, a camel show and Yola dance. Water and soft drinks are unlimited; alcohol is not part of the trip.
Which departure should you take? Both cover the dune drive, the camp and the buffet. The 14:30 departure runs later into the evening and adds a fire show and stargazing through a telescope, which the 11:00 departure does not include. If the night sky is part of the reason you are going, choose the later one.
