Burj Khalifa At the Top: Which Floor, Which Time, and What to Do Around It

Levels 124, 125 and 148 compared, how the timed tickets work, sunset or night, and the Dubai Fountain at the foot of the tower

The Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall, and you will see it from almost everywhere in Dubai, from the beach in Jumeirah to the motorway in from the airport. Going up it is a different matter. There are three observation levels, several ticket types, timed entry slots and a sunset rush that sells out first, and most first-time visitors only find out how it works on the day. This guide explains which floor is worth it, when to go, how far ahead to book and how to spend the hours around your visit in Downtown Dubai, including the fountain show on the lake below.

Which floor: 124, 125 or 148?

The observation experience is called At the Top, and it is spread over three floors. Two of them belong to the standard ticket, and the third is a premium add-on with its own entrance and lounge.

  • Level 124 sits at roughly 450 metres. This is the main deck: floor-to-ceiling glass on all sides and an outdoor terrace where you stand behind a glass screen with nothing but air between you and the city. Most people spend most of their time here.
  • Level 125 is one floor up, joined to 124 by a spiral staircase. It is a little quieter and its interior is designed as a tribute to Arab arts and culture. With a standard ticket you move freely between the two.
  • Level 148, sold as At the Top SKY, is at 555 metres. It has its own lounge with refreshments and an outdoor terrace, and the ticket also includes levels 124 and 125, so you see all three.

Is 148 worth it? The honest answer is that the view from 124 is already high enough to make the towers of Sheikh Zayed Road look like models. The extra hundred metres matter less than the calmer atmosphere: fewer people, somewhere to sit, and a smaller group going up with you. If you are a couple on a special trip or you dislike crowds, SKY makes sense. For families and first-time visitors who want the view and the photo, 124 and 125 are enough. Our private evening tour includes the 124th floor, which is what most guests choose.

Timed tickets and booking ahead

Every At the Top ticket is for a fixed entry slot. You choose a date and a time, and that is when you join the queue for the lifts. Once you are up there, nobody hurries you down, but you cannot simply arrive whenever suits you and expect to go straight up.

The slots fall into ordinary hours and so-called prime hours, which cover the late afternoon and sunset. Prime slots are the ones that sell out, sometimes several days ahead in the cooler months between November and March and around public holidays. Morning slots are usually easy to get at short notice.

Three practical points save a lot of stress:

  • Arrive early. The entrance is inside Dubai Mall, on the lower ground level, and the walk through the mall from a taxi drop-off or the metro can take a good fifteen minutes. Bags go through security screening before the lifts, and at busy times there is a queue for that too. Aim to be at the entrance at least half an hour before your slot.
  • Book the slot, not just the day. If sunset matters to you, look up the sunset time for your date and pick a slot about 30 to 45 minutes earlier. Sunset in Dubai moves through the year, from late afternoon in December to after seven in midsummer.
  • Check the rules in Ramadan and on holidays. Opening hours change during Ramadan and on some public holidays. Look at the official Burj Khalifa site in the week before your visit rather than relying on times printed anywhere else, including here.

The lifts themselves are part of the experience. They are double-deck lifts that travel at about ten metres per second, so the ride to level 124 takes roughly a minute. Ears pop on the way, which surprises children more than it bothers them.
