Philippines First Time Cities: El Nido, Coron, Cebu, Bohol, Manila
Five places to base yourself on a first visit, compared by pace, transport and what each one actually gives you.
The short answer: on a first visit, choose one cluster, not all five. If beaches and boats are the point, base in El Nido or Coron in northern Palawan. If you want easier logistics and a mix of city, countryside and sea, pair Cebu with Bohol. Manila is where most international flights land; spend a day or two there only if history and food appeal to you.
The Philippines is thousands of islands, and the real cost of an ambitious plan is time spent in airports, vans and ferries. Plan around that, not around the map.
The five places at a glance
| Base | Pace | Transport | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Nido | Beach town, busy by day | Flight or a long road transfer; boats for everything else | Limestone lagoons and island-hopping |
| Coron | Rougher, working port town | Flight into Busuanga, then a road transfer | Lakes, wrecks and dive-style sea days |
| Bohol | Slow, rural | Ferry or short flight | Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, countryside |
| Cebu | Busy, practical | Major hub for flights and ferries | Connections, city life, nearby nature |
| Manila | Fast, congested | Main international gateway | History, food, a first night or two |
El Nido or Coron: the Palawan decision
El Nido is the more polished of the two: more guesthouses, more restaurants, and a long menu of day boats. The unflattering part is that popular lagoons fill up with boats in the middle of the day. Coron is scruffier in town but rewards you on the water, with its lakes and wrecks. Our El Nido vs Coron comparison goes deeper; the short rule is that you pick El Nido for scenery and comfort, Coron for variety and a rawer feel.
With extra days, link them by sea instead of a ferry or flight. Helios runs the crossing in both directions as a shared small-group expedition (up to 15 guests): Coron to El Nido over three days, or El Nido to Coron over three days. Expect two nights in simple native huts, snorkelling stops, meals cooked on board, and the Linapacan islands and Culion area in between. The El Nido departure has little electricity and no Wi-Fi. Environmental fees are paid separately, and the Coron departure requires guests to be at least 16. If you want a hotel bed every night, skip it; our guide to the ferry versus the boat expedition weighs the two.
Cebu and Bohol: the easier first trip
Cebu is a hub, not a highlight. Most people use it for flights, ferries and a night or two; see things to do in Cebu for what is worth your time. Bohol is the calmer reward: Chocolate Hills, tarsiers, old stone churches and the Loboc River.
Staying on Bohol is better than rushing it, but if you are based in Cebu, Helios offers a Bohol day trip from Cebu City by fast ferry, a shared small-group tour. Be honest with yourself about the day: it is about 14 hours, the ferry leaves at 07:00, and with hotel pickup you are collected around 05:00 on Mactan or 06:00 in Cebu City. You return to Cebu around 19:00. The river lunch cruise and pickup are optional add-ons. Our is it worth it? piece helps you decide.
Manila: gateway, not destination
Manila is dense, hot and slow-moving in traffic. It does reward a short stay: Intramuros, Binondo and the food. Start with things to do in Manila, then move on to the islands. Do not schedule a tight same-day connection out of it.
Timing and transport
Domestic flights and ferries are the backbone of any route, and weather can delay both. Leave a buffer before an international departure, and read getting around the Philippines and the month-by-month guide before fixing dates. For a longer route, see our two-week itinerary.
