El Nido vs Coron: Which Palawan Base Should You Choose?

Scenery, beaches, diving, town life and logistics compared, with a verdict for different travellers

El Nido vs Coron: Which Palawan Base Should You Choose?

Choose El Nido if you want lagoons, long beaches and a lively town with plenty of restaurants. Choose Coron if you want crystal freshwater lakes, World War II shipwrecks and a quieter, more local base. If you have at least eight days in Palawan, do both: they are linked by a daily ferry and by multi-day boat expeditions.

Both sit in the north of Palawan and share the same limestone karst landscape, so the choice is not about one being prettier. It is about what you will do every day, where you will sleep and how you get there.

Scenery: lagoons vs lakes

El Nido's Bacuit Bay is dotted with more than 40 islands, many with sheer cliffs dropping into shallow turquoise water. The famous lagoons of Miniloc, the Big, Small and Secret Lagoons, are tidal: seawater flows in and out through gaps in the rock.

Coron's highlights are inland. Kayangan Lake on Coron Island is reached by a steep stairway of a few hundred steps, and the viewpoint on the way up is one of the most photographed in the country. The lake itself is brackish, cool and extremely clear. Twin Lagoon is two bodies of water separated by a rock wall that you swim or ladder over, with warm and cool layers mixing in the water. These areas belong to the ancestral domain of the indigenous Tagbanua, who manage access and charge entrance fees.

The best single day in each place: El Nido Tour A with the Big and Secret Lagoons, or the Coron Ultimate Island Tour with Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon.

Beaches

El Nido wins on beaches you can reach without a boat. Nacpan Beach, about 40 minutes north by tricycle or scooter, is a four-kilometre curve of golden sand. Las Cabanas south of town is known for sunsets. Out in the bay, Seven Commandos, Hidden Beach and Paradise Beach appear on standard tours.

Coron town has no beach of its own. The beaches are on islands such as Malcapuya, Banana Island and Bulog Dos, plus the Ditaytayan sandbar, typically combined in one long day. They are excellent and often quieter than El Nido's, but every beach day is a boat day.

Diving and snorkelling

Coron is one of the world's best-known wreck-diving destinations. A fleet of Japanese supply ships was sunk in Coron Bay by US aircraft in September 1944, and around a dozen wrecks lie at depths suitable for recreational and technical divers. Some, such as the Skeleton Wreck and shallow parts of others, can be seen while snorkelling.

El Nido has healthy reefs, good snorkelling on Tours A and C, and dive sites around the bay, but no wrecks on the same scale. If diving is your main reason to come, Coron wins clearly.

Town and atmosphere

El Nido town is compact, busy and noisy in places, with a strip of bars and restaurants along the beach, many international kitchens and a lot of fellow travellers. Development has spread along the coast to Corong-Corong and beyond.

Coron town is smaller and less polished, with a market, a waterfront and a hill, Mount Tapyas, with around 700 steps to a viewpoint at sunset. The Maquinit Hot Springs nearby are a relaxing evening stop. Fewer restaurants, but also fewer crowds.

Getting there

For El Nido, most travellers fly to Puerto Princesa and take a shared or private van north, roughly five to six hours. A small number of flights land directly at Lio Airport near El Nido, usually from Manila, at higher fares.

For Coron, fly to Francisco B. Reyes Airport in Busuanga, often just called Busuanga, from Manila or Cebu. The drive to Coron town takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Combining both

The two are around 4 to 5 hours apart by fast ferry, sailing most days in good weather; timings and operators change, so check close to your date. The more memorable option is a multi-day boat expedition that camps or stays in simple island huts on the way, such as the El Nido to Coron 3-day island expedition with beach huts. It turns the transfer into the highlight of the trip.

A practical route: fly into Puerto Princesa, travel to El Nido, cross by boat to Coron, and fly out of Busuanga back to Manila. That avoids backtracking.

Costs compared

Accommodation in El Nido tends to cost more than in Coron for a similar standard, because demand is higher and much of it is on the beach. Island-hopping tours are in a similar range in both places. Coron adds entrance fees at each Tagbanua-managed site, which are collected on the day and are usually not included in tour prices; in El Nido, the main extra is the municipal environmental fee. Getting to El Nido by van is cheap but long, while flights to Busuanga are quick but fares rise sharply in peak season.

How many days in each?

  • El Nido: 3 to 4 nights allows two tours plus a beach day at Nacpan.
  • Coron: 3 nights allows a lake and lagoon day, a beach or wreck day and Mount Tapyas.
  • Add a buffer day in the wet season, when boats are sometimes cancelled.

Verdict

  • Couples and first-timers: El Nido, for variety and easy beaches.
  • Divers: Coron.
  • Families with young children: El Nido, thanks to land-accessible beaches and the gentler Tours B and D.
  • Travellers who dislike crowds: Coron, especially outside the Kayangan Lake midday rush.
  • Eight days or more in Palawan: both, linked by boat.

FAQ

Is Coron more beautiful than El Nido?

Neither is objectively more beautiful. El Nido's lagoons and islands are more varied; Coron's Kayangan Lake and Twin Lagoon are unique. Many travellers rank Kayangan Lake as the single most striking view in Palawan.

Is Coron less touristy than El Nido?

Coron town feels less developed, but Kayangan Lake gets busy between late morning and early afternoon. Starting early helps in both places.

Can I visit Coron as a day trip from El Nido?

No. The crossing alone takes several hours each way. Plan at least two nights in Coron.

Which is better for snorkelling?

Both are good. El Nido's Tour C has some of the best reef snorkelling, while Coron offers reefs plus a shallow wreck you can see from the surface.

Which airport should I fly into?

Puerto Princesa or Lio for El Nido, Busuanga for Coron. For both, fly into one and out of the other.
