About
The El Mina Mosque stands at the northern end of the Hurghada waterfront, and its two slim minarets and white domes are the most recognisable landmark on the seafront — visible from most of the marina and from boats coming in.
It is a modern building, completed in the 2010s, designed in a traditional idiom: pale stone, arcaded façades, geometric window screens and a large central dome flanked by smaller ones. Floodlit after dark, it is the standard photograph of Hurghada at night.
Visiting
Non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside prayer times, and the courtyard is worth stepping into for the scale and the tilework. A few things to observe:
- Dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered; women should bring a scarf for the head
- Shoes off at the entrance to the prayer hall
- Avoid Friday midday, the main congregational prayer
- Ask before photographing people
History & background
The mosque is one of the clearest signs of what has happened to Hurghada. A town that had a few thousand residents in the 1980s now has several hundred thousand, and the building answers a straightforward need: a congregational mosque large enough for a city, on the seafront where the city's centre of gravity had moved.
Why it looks old
The design borrows from Mamluk and Ottoman traditions — the proportions of the domes, the banded stonework, the shape of the minarets — rather than attempting anything modernist. That is a deliberate and common choice in Egyptian religious architecture, where continuity of form carries meaning, and where a new mosque is expected to look like it belongs to a lineage.
The result is a building that photographs as though it were centuries old and is in fact younger than most of the hotels around it.
Where it stands
Its position matters. The mosque sits at the join between the resort waterfront and El Dahar, the original town — the point where the visitor Hurghada and the resident Hurghada meet. It serves the second and is photographed by the first, which is a reasonable summary of the place.
