Hurghada Grand Aquarium

An indoor aquarium and small zoo on the road south out of Hurghada, built around a walk-through route of themed sections — Red Sea reef tanks, a tunnel, a rainforest area and a desert enclosure with reptiles.

It is aimed squarely at families and at anyone looking for an air-conditioned couple of hours in the middle of the day. Allow ninety minutes to two hours.

Worth knowing

Standards at attractions of this kind vary, and some visitors have found enclosure sizes for the non-fish animals disappointing. If your interest is Red Sea marine life specifically, a snorkelling trip to Giftun will show you far more of it, in better condition, for a comparable price. The aquarium makes most sense as a hot-afternoon option or for young children.

The aquarium opened in the 2010s as part of a broader effort to give Hurghada attractions that work when the sea does not — for windy days, for the middle of summer, and for families with small children who cannot spend eight hours on a boat.

That gap is real. Hurghada's economy is built almost entirely on the water, and a run of rough days can leave a resort full of people with nothing to do.

The argument about aquariums

Public aquariums make two claims: that they educate people about marine life, and that they support conservation. Both are genuinely contested, and worth thinking about in a place like this.

The case in favour is that most visitors will never dive, that seeing a lionfish or a reef shark at close range creates an attachment that a documentary does not, and that people protect what they have encountered. The case against is that a reef in a tank is a reef removed from a reef, that captive conditions are difficult to get right, and that in a town twenty minutes from some of the best living coral on the planet, the wild version is both better and available.

The living alternative

It is worth saying plainly, because it is unusual to be able to: the reefs at Giftun, Abu Ramada and Sha'ab El Erg are a short boat ride away, they are protected, and snorkelling over them costs about the same as a ticket. Everything in the reef tanks here can be seen swimming free within an hour of the marina.
