About
Hula Hula is a sandbank rather than an island — no rock, no vegetation, nothing above water but sand the boats pull up onto. Its shape changes through the year as the prevailing northerly pushes the spit around, so the beach you stand on in May is not quite the one from January.
What makes it worth the crossing is the water around it. The shallows fall away so gradually that you can wade a long way out and still stand, over sand so pale the whole lagoon reads turquoise from the boat. The reef proper starts at the drop on the seaward side, and that is where the snorkelling is — but a lot of guests never get that far, because the swimming is the good part.
