Five Cities in Thailand: A Realistic Route and How to Travel It
Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya fit into about two weeks, but only if you fly the long legs and accept one weak link.
Yes, you can see Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya in one trip, but plan on about twelve to fourteen nights. The five places are far apart: Chiang Mai is in the north, Phuket and Krabi are on the Andaman coast in the south, and Pattaya is on the Gulf coast, a couple of hours by road from Bangkok. With ten days or fewer, drop Pattaya first, then one of the two Andaman stops.
This route suits first-time visitors who want temples, mountains and beaches and can live with a few early airport mornings. It does not suit anyone who dislikes packing up every two or three nights.
The route, in order
Bangkok is the hub, so you will pass through it twice. That is a feature, not a flaw: it gives you a flight connection both times.
| Leg | Best way | Rough time |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok to Chiang Mai | Fly, or overnight sleeper train | About 1 hour 15 by air; around 12 hours by rail |
| Chiang Mai to Phuket | Fly (check for a direct flight, otherwise connect via Bangkok) | Allow most of a day if connecting |
| Phuket to Krabi | Road, or a seasonal boat transfer | Roughly 3 hours by road |
| Krabi to Bangkok | Fly | About 1 hour 20 |
| Bangkok to Pattaya | Road: taxi, bus or private transfer | Roughly 2 hours, longer in traffic |
Pattaya sits close to Bangkok's main airport, so ending there works well before an international flight. If you land exhausted, you can instead start in Pattaya and skip the Bangkok traffic on day one.
Flight, train, road or boat?
Fly for anything north-south. Thailand is long, and domestic flights are frequent and the least painful option.
Take the sleeper train only if the journey itself appeals. You save a hotel night, but you arrive in Chiang Mai tired and the ride is slow.
Drive for Phuket to Krabi and Bangkok to Pattaya. Both are straightforward by road, and Phuket to Krabi crosses the bridge to the mainland. Boats between the two exist, but they depend on season and sea conditions, and they are slower once you add the pier transfers.
Day visit or overnight?
Give each of these a night or more: Bangkok (three nights is comfortable), Chiang Mai (three), and either Phuket or Krabi (two to three). Krabi is calmer and more scenic; Phuket has more infrastructure and more crowds. If you must pick one, our guide to excursions from Phuket shows what the island offers beyond its beaches.
Treat Pattaya as one or two nights, or skip it. It is built around beaches and nightlife rather than sights. See Phuket versus Pattaya and the excursions from Pattaya before deciding it earns a place.
Do not try Phuket as a day trip from Krabi, or the reverse. Six hours of transfers for one afternoon is a bad trade.
Three days worth building a stop around
Bangkok, half a day. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun guided tour lasts about 6 hours on foot and by public ferry. It runs as a shared small group of up to 15 guests. Entry tickets are not in the base price, though you can add them when booking. Hotel pickup is not included, shoulders and knees must be covered, and the courtyards are hot and busy by late morning. Our temple etiquette guide covers what to wear.
Chiang Mai, a full day. The elephant sanctuary day with waterfall and rafting takes about 9 hours, with a waterfall swim, time with rescued elephants (no riding, no chaining, no shows) and a bamboo raft ride. It is a shared small group of up to 10, with hotel pickup in Chiang Mai city where booked. Expect roughly 2.5 hours of driving in total. Bring a towel, as it is not provided. If you are still choosing a sanctuary, read how to choose an ethical one.
Krabi, a boat day. The Krabi 4 Islands day trip by longtail boat lasts about 6 hours, with Chicken Island, the Thale Waek sandbar, Koh Poda and Phra Nang Cave Beach. It runs as a shared small group of up to 15, with hotel pickup, lunch and snorkelling gear. The national park fee is paid in cash on the day. Popular stops fill with other boats, so the morning light and the swim on Koh Poda matter more than ticking off all four. For alternatives, compare the Krabi island-hopping options.
Timing: the catch
The two coasts do not share a calendar. The Andaman side, Phuket and Krabi, has a wetter, rougher season in the middle of the year, when boats can be cancelled. Chiang Mai has a hazy stretch earlier in the year. Check best time to visit Thailand before fixing dates, because a route that is perfect on one coast can be mediocre on another.
What to verify before you book
- Domestic flight schedules and whether Chiang Mai to Phuket runs direct on your dates.
- Train timetables and sleeper availability from the national railway's official site.
- Boat and ferry operators, which vary by season and sea conditions.
- Opening hours and dress rules for the temples, and park fees for the islands.
For a slower pace, see two weeks in Thailand, which covers fewer places.
FAQ
How many days do I need for these five places?
About twelve to fourteen nights is realistic. Ten is tight, and fewer means cutting Pattaya or one Andaman stop.
Should I fly or take the train to Chiang Mai?
Fly if time matters. The overnight sleeper train saves a hotel night but takes around 12 hours, so choose it for the experience, not efficiency.
Is Phuket to Krabi worth doing by boat?
Usually not. Road transfers are simpler and more reliable, and boat links depend on season and sea conditions. Confirm any ferry with the operator.
Are the Helios tours private?
No. The Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi tours listed here are shared small-group tours, with maximums of 15, 10 and 15 guests respectively.
