Phuket vs Pattaya: Which Beach Base Suits You?
Sea, beaches, season, getting there, nightlife and families compared honestly
Choose Phuket if the sea and the islands are the point of your holiday: the water is clearer, the beaches are better and Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay are on the doorstep. Choose Pattaya if you want an easy add-on to Bangkok, a city with everything open all year, and lower costs. Neither is better in general; they suit different trips.
Below we compare the two on the questions travellers ask us most.
At a glance
| Phuket | Pattaya | |
|---|---|---|
| Sea | Andaman Sea, clear and blue in the dry season | Gulf of Thailand, greener and less clear near the city |
| Best months | December to April | November to March, workable most of the year |
| From Bangkok | About 1 hour 20 minutes by air | About 2 hours by road from Suvarnabhumi airport |
| Feel | Island with many separate beach towns | A city on the sea |
| Signature day trips | Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, Similan Islands | Koh Larn, Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch |
| Price level | Higher, especially in peak season | Generally lower |
Beaches and the sea
This is the biggest difference. Phuket sits on the Andaman Sea, and from December to April its west coast beaches, such as Kata, Karon, Kamala and Nai Harn, have the clear turquoise water most people picture when they think of Thailand. Patong is the busiest and most developed beach, the others are calmer.
Pattaya is on the Gulf of Thailand, close to a large port and a big city. The water on Pattaya Beach and Jomtien is swimmable but rarely clear, and the beaches are narrower. Most visitors who want a proper beach day take the boat to Koh Larn (Coral Island), around 45 minutes by ferry or less by speedboat, where the water is noticeably better. A three-island catamaran cruise from Pattaya is a relaxed way to see Koh Larn and its neighbours in a day.
Snorkelling and diving are in a different league in Phuket. The classic day out is a speedboat to Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Bamboo Island, and in season the Similan Islands are among the best snorkelling sites in Thailand.
Weather and season
Phuket's calendar is sharp: excellent from December to April, rough from May to October, when the southwest monsoon brings waves, red flags and cancelled boat trips. Prices drop accordingly.
Pattaya's weather is closer to Bangkok's and more even across the year. It has a rainy season too, roughly June to October, but the sea is sheltered and boat trips to the nearby islands run on most days. If your dates are fixed in July or August, Pattaya is often the safer beach choice of the two, although Koh Samui is the better summer beach overall.
Getting there
Pattaya is about 150 km from Bangkok, roughly two hours by road from Suvarnabhumi airport, depending on traffic. That makes it easy to combine with a few days in the capital without another flight. U-Tapao airport, south of Pattaya, also has some domestic and international flights.
Phuket has its own international airport with direct flights from many countries and frequent connections from Bangkok (about 1 hour 20 minutes). From the airport in the north of the island, the drive to Patong or Kata takes about an hour. Phuket is also a good base for Krabi, Khao Lak and the islands.
What there is to do besides the beach
Phuket
- Island and bay trips: Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay with James Bond Island, the Similan Islands, Coral Island.
- Phuket Old Town, with its Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés and the Sunday walking street.
- The Big Buddha and Wat Chalong, the island's most important temple. Our Phuket city tour covers all three in half a day.
- Viewpoints such as Promthep Cape at sunset.
Pattaya
- Koh Larn and the smaller islands offshore.
- The Sanctuary of Truth, a huge carved teak building by the sea.
- Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, a large botanical park with shows.
- Water parks, viewpoints at Pratamnak hill, and the floating market.
- Easy day trips back towards Bangkok and its markets.
Nightlife and atmosphere
Both have a well-known nightlife street: Bangla Road in Patong and Walking Street in Pattaya. Pattaya's reputation as a party city is bigger, and parts of the centre are clearly adult-oriented. It is easy to avoid them, though: Jomtien, Wong Amat and the Pratamnak area are quieter and popular with families and long-stay visitors.
Phuket spreads its atmosphere across the island. If you want nightlife, stay in Patong; if you want quiet, choose Kata, Karon, Kamala, Nai Harn or the north-west beaches. That flexibility is one of Phuket's strengths.
Families and couples
Families do well in both. Phuket offers calmer beaches in the dry season and gentle island trips; Pattaya has short transfers from Bangkok, lots of attractions for children and weather you can rely on more of the year. With small children, the two-hour road transfer to Pattaya is often easier than an extra flight.
Couples looking for a romantic beach holiday usually prefer Phuket and its smaller southern beaches, especially combined with a night or two on Phi Phi or in Krabi.
Costs
Pattaya is generally cheaper: hotels, food and taxis all cost less, and there is a huge choice of mid-range accommodation. Phuket varies widely. Patong and the luxury resorts are expensive in peak season, but quieter beaches and the old town still have good-value options. Transport around Phuket is a notable extra cost, because distances between beaches are long and taxis are not cheap.
Our honest verdict
- Pick Phuket for clear water, snorkelling, island hopping and a range of beach towns, and travel between December and April.
- Pick Pattaya for a short trip from Bangkok, a lower budget, family attractions, or travel in the rainy season.
- Two weeks or more? Many travellers do Bangkok and Pattaya first, then fly south to Phuket or Krabi for the second week.
FAQ
Is the sea cleaner in Phuket or Pattaya?
Phuket. In the dry season the Andaman Sea is far clearer than the water on Pattaya's city beaches. In Pattaya the clearest water is around Koh Larn and the outer islands.
Which is better in summer?
From June to September Pattaya usually has the calmer sea, while Phuket's west coast is often rough. For the best summer beach weather, consider Koh Samui.
How far is Pattaya from Bangkok?
About 150 km, typically around two hours by road from Suvarnabhumi airport, longer in heavy traffic.
Is Pattaya suitable for families?
Yes, if you choose your area. Jomtien, Wong Amat and Pratamnak are quieter, and attractions such as Nong Nooch, the Sanctuary of Truth and island trips work well with children.
Can I visit Phi Phi from Pattaya?
Not as a day trip. Phi Phi is in the Andaman Sea, on the other side of the country. It is a day trip from Phuket or Krabi.
