Krabi Island Hopping: 4 Islands, Hong Islands or 7 Islands?
Three classic boat trips from Ao Nang compared: what you see, how the day feels and which one to pick
Choose the Krabi 4 Islands trip for classic beaches and the Tup Island sandbar, the Hong Islands for a cliff-ringed lagoon and calmer, clearer water, and the 7 Islands sunset trip if you want an evening on the water with a barbecue and glowing plankton. If you only do one, most first-timers are happiest with the 4 Islands; if you have done that, the Hong Islands is the step up.
Krabi's coast is scattered with limestone islands, and from Ao Nang, Railay and Klong Muang you can reach dozens of them in under an hour. The three packages below are what nearly every operator sells. They overlap less than their names suggest, so it is worth knowing what each day actually contains.

Krabi 4 Islands: the classic
This is the trip most people mean when they talk about island hopping in Krabi. The four stops are usually:
- Phra Nang Cave Beach on the Railay peninsula, with its cliffs, climbers and the small shrine in the cave at the end of the beach.
- Chicken Island (Koh Kai), named for a rock that looks like a chicken's head; usually a snorkelling stop or a pass-by.
- Tup Island, where at low tide a sandbar connects it to its neighbours and you can walk across the sea.
- Poda Island, a long white beach with a single limestone pillar offshore, often the lunch stop.
The distances are short, so a Krabi 4 Islands day trip by longtail boat with Thai lunch works well: the longtail is the traditional wooden boat of the Andaman coast, slower than a speedboat but part of the experience, and the hops between islands are only 10 to 20 minutes each.
The honest downside is crowds. Poda and Phra Nang are visited by most boats leaving Ao Nang, and between late morning and early afternoon they get busy. Leaving early helps more than anything else.
Hong Islands: the scenic step up
The Hong Islands lie north of Ao Nang, inside a national park, and feel more dramatic than the 4 Islands. The centrepiece is Koh Hong itself: an island with a lagoon inside it, surrounded by sheer walls. At the right tide boats or kayaks enter through a narrow gap, and the colour of the water inside is hard to believe.
Other typical stops are Koh Lao Lading, a small beach tucked between cliffs, and Koh Pakbia, a pair of islands joined by a sandbar. Some trips include a climb to a viewpoint over the archipelago, a short but steep walk. Snorkelling is generally better here than on the 4 Islands route, with clearer water on good days.
Because the islands are further away, a Hong Islands day trip from Krabi by speedboat with lunch is the sensible way to go: it gets you there quickly and leaves more time in the lagoon and on the beaches.
7 Islands sunset: the evening option
The 7 Islands trip starts later, typically in the early afternoon, and covers several of the 4 Islands stops plus a few more before the sun goes down. The real difference comes after dark: dinner on a beach or on board, and then a swim in water where bioluminescent plankton light up around your hands and feet.
A Krabi 7 Islands sunset tour by longtail with BBQ and plankton is a good choice if you have already seen the islands by day, or if you simply prefer to spend the morning by the pool. Two honest notes: the plankton is easiest to see on dark nights around the new moon, and much fainter under a full moon; and like all wildlife it is never guaranteed.
Longtail or speedboat?
For the 4 Islands, a longtail is perfectly fine and more atmospheric. For the Hong Islands, a speedboat saves a lot of time. The trade-offs:
- Longtail: slower, noisier engine, low to the water, more spray. Charming in calm conditions, tiring in waves.
- Speedboat: faster and covers longer distances, but bumpier and usually with more passengers.
- Private longtail: if you want to set your own pace, a private boat from Ao Nang lets you choose stops and avoid the busiest beaches at peak times.
Can you combine them?
Yes, and many people do. A good plan for a week in Krabi: the 4 Islands early in your stay, the Hong Islands a few days later, and the 7 Islands sunset as a relaxed evening. If you also want Phi Phi, it is reachable from Krabi as a long full-day speedboat trip, which can make the 4 Islands unnecessary because some Phi Phi trips stop at them on the way back.
When to go
The calmest months on the Andaman sea are roughly November to April. In the rainy season, May to October, trips still run on many days, but waves are bigger, visibility drops and some departures are cancelled. The Tup sandbar and the Hong lagoon both depend on the tide, so routes change daily and your operator will plan around them.
Practical tips
- Park fees. Both the 4 Islands and the Hong Islands are inside national parks; fees are charged per person in cash. Check whether your trip includes them.
- Footwear. Water shoes help on rocky landings and on the sandbar.
- Sun. Little shade on longtails. Bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and a long-sleeved top.
- Dry bag. Longtails are wet boats. Keep phones and cash protected.
- Monkeys. Around Railay and some beaches, keep food and bags closed.
