Thailand First-Timers: Which of Five Cities to Base In
Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi or Pattaya: how to choose one base for a first trip, and what each costs you in time and comfort.
The short answer: if you have one base and a week or less, choose Bangkok for temples, food and easy day trips. Choose Krabi or Phuket if beaches and boats are the point, Chiang Mai if you want a slower, cooler, more traditional north, and Pattaya only if you want a short, easy coast stop close to Bangkok and accept that it is the least rewarding of the five for most first-timers.
Thailand is long, and the five places are far apart. Trying to see all five in a week means more time in airports than in temples.
Who this is for
This is for first-time visitors choosing where to sleep, not for people building a full route. If you have two weeks, our realistic first-timer itinerary links the places together.
The five bases compared
| Base | Pace | Best for | Getting around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | Fast, hot, loud | Temples, markets, food, day trips | Trains, river boats, taxis; heavy traffic |
| Chiang Mai | Slower, walkable old city | Temples, cooking, mountains, sanctuaries | Flight or long overland journey from Bangkok; shared taxis locally |
| Phuket | Busy and spread out | Beaches, island boats, Old Town | You usually need a taxi or transfer |
| Krabi | Relaxed | Limestone scenery, island hopping | Boats from Ao Nang; Railay is reached by boat only |
| Pattaya | Loud, nightlife-driven | A short beach stop near Bangkok | A couple of hours by road from Bangkok |
Bangkok: the base that gives you the most
Bangkok is the one place on this list where a first visit can fill several days. It is also hot and congested, and the pavements are uneven. Plan indoor breaks in the afternoon.
For the old royal city, Helios runs the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun guided tour. It lasts 6 hours and is a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests. You start in the Amulet Market, visit the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, take the public ferry across the Chao Phraya to Wat Arun, and end at the reclining Buddha in Wat Pho. Entry tickets are not in the base price, but you can add them when you book. Hotel pickup is not included. Shoulders and knees must be covered, so read our temple dress code guide first.
Day trips from Bangkok
Two are worth knowing. The Ayutthaya temples day trip with lunch takes 7 hours in a shared group of up to 15 guests. It visits four temples of the former capital, about 80 km north of Bangkok, with entrance fees and a buffet lunch included. The guide speaks English or German. The drive is roughly an hour and a half each way, so expect a lot of van time.
The Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market trip lasts 9 hours and is a shared tour of up to 34 guests. Start times are 06:30, 08:30 and 10:00. You ride the train through the Maeklong market, then take a longtail boat at Damnoen Saduak. It is touristy and the group is large, but the train moment is genuinely unusual. Meals are not included. Chiang Mai: slower, but a journey away
Chiang Mai has a compact walled old city, many temples, cooking classes and hills nearby. Getting there from Bangkok means a short flight or a long overland trip. Do not add it to a very short stay. Our Chiang Mai day trips guide covers what is worth leaving town for. Air quality can be poor in the dry-season burning months, roughly late winter into spring.
Phuket and Krabi: choose by atmosphere
Both sit on the Andaman coast and share a rainy season, roughly from mid-year into autumn, when seas can be rough and boat trips are cancelled. Phuket has more of everything: beaches, restaurants, nightlife and traffic. Krabi is quieter, with limestone cliffs and easy access to the islands; see our Krabi island hopping guide or the best excursions from Phuket.
Pattaya: the honest verdict
Pattaya is the nearest beach resort to Bangkok, which is its main advantage. The town is built around nightlife and the beaches are busy. If the coast is your goal, Phuket vs Pattaya sets out the trade-offs.
Timing and what to verify before you go
The weather differs by coast, so check when to go month by month. Before you commit, check the official sites for temple opening hours (the Grand Palace can close for ceremonies), ferry and boat schedules, and airline timetables. Confirm the current details on each Helios trip page, including meeting points.
FAQ
Which is the best base for a first trip to Thailand?
Bangkok, for most people. It has the widest range of sights and day trips, and it is the usual arrival point. Add a beach stay if you have more time.
Can I see all five places in one week?
Technically yes, realistically no. The distances mean flights or long transfers between most of them, and you would see little of each.
Are the Helios Bangkok trips private?
No. All three are shared small-group tours: up to 15 guests on the temples tour and the Ayutthaya trip, and up to 34 on the markets trip.
Do the Helios tours include temple entry?
The Ayutthaya trip includes entrance fees. On the Bangkok temples tour, entry tickets are not in the base price but can be added as an option when you book.
