Extra Night in Thailand: Phuket, Krabi or Pattaya?

What one more evening and morning actually buys you in each of three very different beach bases.

Extra Night in Thailand: Phuket, Krabi or Pattaya?

If you have one spare night, choose Krabi for the calmest evening and the shortest boat day, Phuket for the most to do around a big boat trip, and Pattaya if you want to avoid a flight. This piece is for travellers who already have a Thailand route and are wondering where one extra night does the most good.

The honest summary: the night matters less than the morning after it. All three stops are built around a boat day, and each boat day asks something different of you.

The three stops at a glance

Krabi: the gentlest extra night

Most visitors base themselves in Ao Nang, a beachfront strip of restaurants, massage shops and longtail boats. It is not a party town. An extra evening here means a slow walk at sunset, dinner, and an early night. That suits the next day well.

The Krabi 4 Islands day trip by longtail boat is six hours, the shortest of the three. It runs in a small shared group of up to 15. You visit Chicken Island, the Thale Waek sandbar by Koh Tup, Koh Poda for lunch and swimming, and finish at Phra Nang Cave Beach below the Railay cliffs. Hotel pickup is included, and the national park fee is paid in cash on the day, so bring it.

The unflattering part: a longtail is open, noisy and slow, and the sandbar depends on the tide. If you are comparing other routes, our Krabi island-hopping guide sets out the alternatives.

Phuket: the most to fill the time

Phuket gives an extra evening the most options: the beaches along the west coast, a sunset viewpoint, or Phuket Town, whose old shophouses are best on foot. It also has the busiest roads and the most crowded beaches. Where you sleep decides how much of that you meet.

The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Bamboo Island speedboat day lasts eight hours. After pier check-in, the crossing to Phi Phi Leh takes about 50 minutes. You then spend about 15 minutes at Maya Bay and another 15 in Pileh Lagoon. Lunch is a buffet on Phi Phi Don, with a halal menu, and the afternoon ends on Bamboo Island.

It is a shared boat for up to 70 guests, so expect company at every stop. Hotel pickup applies only if booked with transfer. The national park fee is not included unless your booking says so. Read our Phi Phi and Maya Bay guide before deciding if the speed is worth it.

Pattaya: the extra night without a flight

Pattaya sits on the Gulf coast, a road journey from Bangkok. For a traveller starting or ending in the capital, an extra night here costs no flight. Evenings are loud, and Walking Street is the obvious draw. The city beach is not why people come for the sea; the islands are.

The Pattaya three-island catamaran cruise is eight hours door to door, with about seven on a crewed shared catamaran for up to 15 guests. It calls at Koh Phai, Koh Rin and Monkey Island, with a Thai buffet lunch on board and snorkelling and fishing gear provided. Marina and island fees are included. Pickup is in Pattaya City only, starting with a transfer of about 45 minutes.

So plan the night before sensibly. A very late evening and a morning pickup do not mix, especially on a boat.

Practical timing and transport

  • Phuket and Krabi: most visitors fly in, so an extra night helps absorb a late arrival or an early departure.
  • Pattaya: allow for Bangkok traffic on the road; it can add well over the usual journey time.
  • Season: Phuket and Krabi are on the Andaman coast and Pattaya is on the Gulf, so rough-sea months differ. See best time to visit Thailand.

What to check before you travel

Check the official national park pages for current rules and access at Maya Bay and the Krabi islands. Confirm ferry and flight times with the operator. Confirm your pickup point with Helios, and check sea conditions for your dates.
