A Spain Five-City Itinerary That Actually Works by Rail

Madrid, Seville, Granada, Valencia and Barcelona in ten days, with one awkward leg you should know about before you book.

The short answer

Fly into Madrid, fly out of Barcelona, and use trains in between. Give the route about ten days. Five cities in a week is possible, but you will spend much of it on platforms and in taxis.

The order that works best is Madrid, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Barcelona. It avoids backtracking and ends in the city with the most to do. The weak link is Granada to Valencia, which has no quick direct rail connection. Plan a long travel day for it, or drop Valencia if time is short.

Who this route is for

It suits first-time visitors who want Spain's big contrasts: royal Madrid, Moorish Andalusia, a Mediterranean port, and Gaudí's Barcelona. It does not suit anyone who dislikes packing up every two nights. If you only have a week, choose three cities. Our piece on Madrid or Barcelona helps you decide where to start.

The route, in the order you meet it

Madrid: two nights

Start here because the long-haul flights are easiest. Spend a day on the old centre and one museum, not three. In the evening, do what Madrid does and move from bar to bar. The Madrid Tapas Walk through La Latina starts at 18:30 at the Plaza Mayor. It is a three-hour small-group walk (up to 15 guests, shared) with four bars and a drink at each.

Seville: two nights

Seville is the city to give a full second day. Walk early, rest in the afternoon and go out again at dusk. In high summer the afternoon heat is severe, so spring and autumn are kinder.

Granada: one or two nights

Stay overnight. The Alhambra is booked by timed entry, and a rushed day visit from Seville means a long round trip and little time. Check official ticket sales well ahead, because slots can sell out.

Valencia: one night

Valencia is the easy breather: flat, walkable and by the sea. One night and a full afternoon is enough, though two is pleasant if you want the beach.

Barcelona: three nights

Finish here. Begin with the Gothic Quarter and Old Town walking tour, a two-hour 10:00 walk through the Roman wall, the cathedral exterior, Plaça del Rei, Plaça Sant Jaume and El Call. Entry to the cathedral and museums is not included. Then book the Sagrada Família guided tour with entry ticket. Timed tickets often sell out days ahead, and this small-group tour (up to 15 guests, shared) has the ticket booked already. The guided part lasts about an hour and a half. The towers are not part of it.

Fly, rail, drive or boat?

  • Rail is the default. High-speed trains link Madrid with Seville, Granada and Barcelona, and Barcelona with Valencia. Book ahead for the best seats and fares.
  • Slower links: Seville to Granada is a modest journey by coach or regional train, not a high-speed one. Granada to Valencia is the long one, by coach or with changes. Check current timetables.
  • Fly only for the opening and closing legs, or to skip the Granada–Valencia stretch if a sensible connection exists.
  • Drive only for Andalusia, if you want villages between Seville and Granada. Cities here are awkward to park in, and one-way rentals can be expensive.
  • Boat has no real place on this route. Ferries serve the Balearic Islands, which are a different trip.

Day visit or overnight?

Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and Granada deserve overnights. Valencia can be a night or a long day if you accept a rushed pace. Every extra stop you squeeze in as a day visit costs you a morning of check-out and a half-day of transfer.

Where Helios fits

The Helios tours above run in Madrid and Barcelona only, and each describes just the places in its own itinerary. None of them starts in Seville, Granada or Valencia. If you want a guide based in one of those cities, send us an enquiry and we will discuss what is possible.

Check before you book

  • Train timetables and booking windows on the rail operator's official site.

  • Local holidays and festivals, which close shops and fill trains. See Spain public holidays in October and November.
  • Weather for your month: Spain in October covers Madrid and Barcelona.

FAQ

How many days do I need for these five cities?

Ten days is comfortable. Seven is possible but tiring, with several mornings lost to trains. With fewer, cut Valencia first.

Is the route better in reverse?

It works either way. Starting in Barcelona and ending in Madrid is fine if your flights suit it. Just keep the long Granada–Valencia leg in mind and check your flight options at both ends.

Should I take the Granada to Valencia leg overland?

Only if you accept a long day. There is no quick direct rail link, so compare coach, train with changes and any flight connection on the day-of-travel options you find.

Can Helios guide me in Seville, Granada or Valencia?

The featured Helios tours are in Madrid and Barcelona. For the other cities, send an enquiry and ask about a guide based there.
