Portugal for First-Timers: Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, Coimbra or Faro

Five places, one decision: which to use as your base, and which to see on a day out.

Who this is for, and the short answer

This guide is for first-time visitors choosing where to sleep in Portugal, not just what to see. Base yourself in Lisbon if you have a long weekend to a week. Take Sintra as a day trip. Add Porto if you have five days or more, and treat Coimbra as a stop between the two. Faro is a different kind of trip: pick it for sea and sand, not for a city break.

The five places are not equal. Lisbon and Porto are real cities to sleep in. Sintra is better as a day out. Coimbra is a good half-day or one night. Faro suits a beach week.

Lisbon: the best first base

Lisbon has the widest range within easy reach. You can walk from Praça do Comércio through Sé Cathedral and up the Alfama lanes to the Portas do Sol viewpoint. The hills are steep, the cobbles are slippery and the popular trams are crowded. Expect to climb, so wear proper shoes.

If you would rather have Alfama explained than stumble through it, Helios runs a 3-hour Alfama and Lisbon old town walk. It runs as a shared small group of up to 12 guests or as a private tour for your own party, and both follow the same route.

Sintra: go for a day, not a night

Sintra is around 40 minutes from Lisbon by train. Pena Palace sits on a hilltop above the town, and the walk up is steep. It is busy for much of the day, and the hills can be misty even when Lisbon is sunny. Many first-timers try to fit in too much; Pena Palace and the old town are enough for one day.

Helios offers an 8-hour Sintra and Pena Palace day trip from Lisbon. It covers Pena Palace, Sintra old town and Cabo da Roca, again as a small group or a private tour. Admission, transport and food are not included unless your quote confirms them. For the practical detail, read our Sintra day trip guide.

Porto: the second city worth the train

Porto is Lisbon in a tighter, steeper package. The train from Lisbon takes roughly three hours. Start at São Bento Station with its tiled hall, then go down through the cathedral area to Ribeira and the Dom Luís I Bridge. Allow time for stairs and a lot of up and down.

Helios runs a 3-hour Porto old town and riverside walk along that line, in small-group or private format. If you want vineyards, the Douro Valley day trip is a long day, so do not add it to a short stay.

Coimbra and Faro: the honest take

Coimbra sits roughly between Porto and Lisbon, on the main rail line. Its university hill and old lanes are rewarding, but the town is small and the climb from the river is steep. It works well as a break in the journey, not as a base. Helios has no Coimbra tour in the trips featured here, so plan it independently.

Faro is in the south, a few hours from Lisbon by train or road. Its old town is small, and the draw is the Ria Formosa lagoon and the Algarve coast. Do not expect Lisbon-style sightseeing. In cooler months, some beach businesses are quiet.

Timing and transport

  • Lisbon to Sintra: a short train, then a bus or walk uphill.
  • Lisbon to Porto: a train of roughly three hours; book ahead in busy periods.
  • Porto to Coimbra: a shorter train, so easy as a stop.
  • Lisbon to Faro: train, bus, car or a short flight.

Weather and daylight change the plan; our Portugal in October guide covers one popular month.

What to verify before you go

Check these on official sites, as they change:

  • Opening hours and ticket rules for Pena Palace and other monuments, including timed entry.
  • Train timetables and booking requirements on the national rail operator's site.
  • Ferry and boat schedules for the Ria Formosa if you go to Faro.
  • For Helios trips, availability, guide and final quote; we confirm these before booking.

FAQ

Which city should I choose if I only have four days?

Choose Lisbon and add Sintra as a day trip. Porto is a three-hour train away, and the journey eats into a short stay.

Is Sintra worth a full day?

Yes, if you like palaces and hills. Expect crowds at Pena Palace and plenty of uphill walking.

Are the Helios trips private?

They run in two formats: a shared small group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for just your party. Check which format you are booking.

Can I see Coimbra and Faro with Helios?

The trips featured here cover Lisbon, Sintra and Porto. Ask the team if you want help with other places.
