Portugal 7 Day Itinerary: What Fits and What to Leave
Lisbon, Sintra and Porto fit comfortably in a week; the Algarve, Alentejo and islands do not.
The short answer
Seven days fits Lisbon, Sintra and Porto, and nothing else. Three nights in Lisbon, three in Porto and one transfer day between them is already a full week. Add the Algarve or the Alentejo and you spend the trip in car parks and stations.
This plan suits first-time visitors who want Portugal's two main cities and one famous day trip, and who are happy to walk uphill on cobbles. It does not suit anyone hoping for beaches. The Algarve is a separate trip.
The route, day by day
Days 1–2: Lisbon
Land, drop your bags and start with the old centre. Lisbon's hills are steep and the pavements are polished stone, so wear shoes with grip. A guided walk saves you from getting lost in Alfama. Our Alfama and Lisbon old town walk takes about three hours. It goes from Praça do Comércio to Sé Cathedral, up through the Alfama lanes to Portas do Sol. It runs as a small group of up to 12 or as a private tour, on the same route. Admission, food and transport are not included unless your quote confirms them.
Day 2 is for Belém: the riverside monuments, the monastery and the famous custard tarts. Expect queues at midday. Go early or late.
Day 3: Sintra
This is a long day. The Sintra and Pena Palace day trip from Lisbon lasts eight hours by road. It covers Pena Palace, Sintra old town and Cabo da Roca, the windswept cape on the Atlantic. Sintra gets crowded and the hills often hold mist, which looks lovely but hides the views. Our Sintra guide covers transport and timing in more detail. Small group (up to 12) and private formats are both offered.
Day 4: the transfer day
Take the fast train from Lisbon to Porto. It takes roughly three hours, and you travel north. Book a morning departure and you still get an afternoon in Porto. Count this as a half-lost day. Pack light, because the stations have stairs.
Days 5–6: Porto
Porto is more compact than Lisbon, but it is just as hilly. The Porto old town and riverside walk is three hours. It runs from São Bento Station with its tiled hall, past the cathedral and down to Ribeira, then to the Dom Luís I Bridge. It is offered as a small group of up to 12 or as a private tour.
Use the second day for the Douro. It is a long day on the road, so read the Douro Valley day trip guide before you commit. If you are tired, spend the day in Porto instead. Cross the river for the port lodges, then take an unhurried afternoon.
Day 7: fly home
Fly from Porto, or take the early train back to Lisbon only if your flight is late. Do not plan anything on the last day.
What to leave for another trip
- The Algarve: a long drive or flight south, and beach time you will not have.
- Alentejo, Évora and Coimbra: each deserves a night.
- Madeira and the Azores: these need their own flights and their own week.
A slower alternative
Drop Sintra and the Douro, and stay in two cities. Spend four nights in Lisbon and three in Porto, with an optional night in Coimbra on the way. You see less, but you walk at a calmer pace and lose less time to transfers. The tradeoff is that you miss Sintra's palaces, which are the single best day out near Lisbon. If you can only do one day trip, choose Sintra.
Timing and what to verify
Autumn is quieter and cooler, with shorter daylight. See Portugal in October for a seasonal check. Before you book, check the official sites for:
- train timetables and seat reservations between Lisbon and Porto
- opening days and ticket rules for Pena Palace and the Belém monuments, since some close one day a week
- final availability, guide, access and quote for any Helios tour, which we confirm before booking
Portugal 7 day itinerary FAQ
Is seven days enough for Portugal?
It is enough for Lisbon, Sintra and Porto at a steady pace. It is not enough to add the south as well.
Should I go Lisbon to Porto or Porto to Lisbon?
Either works. Choose the order that matches your flights. Flying into one city and out of the other avoids doubling back.
Are the Helios walks private?
They run in two formats: a small group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for your party. The route is the same in both.
Are tickets and transport included?
Admission, transport, food and tastings are not included unless your quote confirms them. Ask when you request your plan.
