Philippines Five-Stop Route: Manila, Coron, El Nido, Cebu, Bohol

Five places across three island groups work in about two weeks, as long as you accept that most of the connecting is done by plane and boat, not train.

Philippines Five-Stop Route: Manila, Coron, El Nido, Cebu, Bohol

Short answer: yes, these five stops fit into roughly two weeks, but not comfortably into one. The order that wastes the least time is Manila, then Coron, El Nido, Cebu and Bohol. You fly between island groups, take a ferry for the short hop from Cebu to Bohol, and can choose a boat or a road-and-ferry route between Coron and El Nido. There is no useful intercity rail on this route, so do not plan around trains.

Who this route is for

It suits travellers who want limestone islands, a reef day, Bohol's countryside and one big city, and who accept that every transfer eats half a day. If you only have a week, drop two stops. Our two-week Philippines itinerary shows how the pieces stack up.

The route, stop by stop

1. Manila: arrive, rest, do not linger

Most international flights land at Manila. Give it one or two nights for Intramuros and Binondo; our Manila guide covers both. The traffic is slow and the heat heavy, so do not schedule a tight domestic flight on the day you arrive.

2. Coron: two nights

Fly from Manila to Busuanga, the airport serving Coron. Coron is about boat days: lakes, lagoons and wreck snorkelling. Our Coron island hopping guide explains which day trips are worth it.

3. El Nido: two to three nights

This is the one leg where the journey can be the trip. Helios runs the crossing as a three-day boat expedition in both directions. Going Coron to El Nido, the Coron to El Nido 3-day expedition heads south past Culion and through the Linapacan islands, with a briefing at 17:00 the evening before. You sleep two nights in simple native-style huts, and the boat lands at San Fernando port, from where a transfer takes you to El Nido town. The group is shared, up to 15 guests, and guests must be at least 16.

The reverse, the El Nido to Coron 3-day expedition, is also a shared small group of up to 15. It has little electricity and no Wi-Fi, and reaches Coron around 16:00 to 17:00 on day three. Use it only if you want the off-grid days, and do not book a flight on the day it ends. Our ferry versus expedition comparison weighs the options.

If you would rather keep the days for El Nido itself, see the island hopping tours compared. Either way, the boat is not for everyone: the huts are simple and the schedule follows the sea.

4. Cebu: one to two nights

Getting from El Nido to Cebu is the least tidy leg. Direct flights have existed, but schedules change; otherwise you connect through Manila or Puerto Princesa. Allow most of a day. Cebu city itself is a base, not a highlight; see things to do in Cebu for what is worth your time.

The best reef day is a day visit, not an overnight: the Mactan island hopping tour lasts 8 hours by pump boat, with snorkelling at the San Vicente Marine Sanctuary and stops at Gilutungan, Nalusuan and Caohagan. It is a shared tour of up to 15 guests with an English-speaking guide. Mask, snorkel and the entrance and environmental fees are included; towels and fins are not, so bring your own fins. Hotel pickup and the Nalusuan buffet lunch are optional add-ons.

5. Bohol: overnight if you can

Take a fast ferry from Cebu to Tagbilaran; the crossing takes a couple of hours. Bohol can be a rushed day trip from Cebu, and the Bohol day trip assessment is honest about the cost: long hours for a quick look at the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers. One night lets you see the countryside at a normal pace; the Bohol guide shows what to include.

Flight, ferry, drive or boat?

  • Between island groups: fly. Manila to Busuanga and Cebu to Manila are standard domestic routes.
  • Cebu to Bohol: ferry, with a day visit possible but an overnight kinder.
  • Coron to El Nido: flight or ferry on one side, or the three-day boat as a trip in itself.
  • Rail: not a practical option between these destinations.

Domestic flights have strict baggage limits on smaller planes, and weather can delay both flights and boats. Build in a buffer day before your international departure. Our guide to flights, ferries and vans goes deeper, and the month-by-month guide helps you pick the season.

What to verify before you book

  • Current domestic flight and ferry timetables on the airline and ferry operator sites, especially El Nido to Cebu.
  • Baggage allowances for small aircraft.
  • Local environmental fees and any permits, which are set locally and change.
  • Weather advisories from the national weather service, and whether boat trips are running on your dates.
  • Your tour dates, availability and options, on the Helios trip pages.

FAQ

How many days do I need for these five stops?

Plan 12 to 14 days. Fewer is possible, but you will spend much of it in airports and on piers.

Should I do Bohol as a day trip or stay overnight?

If you have the time, stay one night. A day trip from Cebu works, but the ferry crossings take up a large share of the day.

Is the Coron to El Nido boat expedition shared or private?

Both Helios expeditions are listed as small-group shared tours of up to 15 guests.

Can I take a train between these places?

No. The islands are separated by sea, and there is no useful intercity rail on this route. Use flights, ferries and boats.
