Paris, Lyon and Nice: How to Travel Between Them
Train is the default for Paris–Lyon, while Lyon–Nice and Paris–Nice come down to a choice between a long train day and a short flight.
If you are linking Paris, Lyon and Nice, take the high-speed train from Paris to Lyon, which takes around two hours. For Lyon to Nice, choose between a long daytime train and a short flight. Paris to Nice directly is the one leg where a flight often beats the train, unless you like long scenic rail days. Everything below assumes you want to arrive rested enough to enjoy the cities.
Who this is for
This is for first-time visitors to France planning roughly a week or more, with a Paris start and a Riviera finish. Lyon is the optional middle stop. It is easy to skip, but it breaks up the journey well and is a serious food city.
The route and the decision
The natural order is Paris, then Lyon, then Nice. It follows the line south-east through the Rhône valley and then to the Mediterranean. Going Paris to Nice directly and skipping Lyon saves a day. Adding Lyon costs about half a day of transfers but gives you a different France.
| Leg | Main option | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Paris to Lyon | High-speed train | Leaves from Paris Gare de Lyon, around two hours, arrives in the city centre. Flying makes little sense. |
| Lyon to Nice | Train, or a short flight | The train can be direct or involve a change in the south, and takes several hours. Lyon's airport is outside the city, so the flight saves less time than it appears. |
| Paris to Nice | Flight, or a long train day | The flight is a little over an hour and a half in the air. Nice's airport is close to the city, with a tram link. The train is a full day's travel. |
Practical timing and connections
Mind the Paris stations
Paris has several mainline stations, and trains to the south leave from Gare de Lyon. Allow generous time if you are coming from an airport or another station, and do not book a tight connection across the city.
Do not schedule a tour on a travel day
The big risk is stacking a morning tour on the day you travel. Our Paris Louvre tour starts at 09:00, and the Nice and Monaco day trip also starts at 09:00. Sleep in the right city the night before. A delayed train that arrives at midnight and a 09:00 start do not mix well.
Fitting in guided days
In Paris, the Louvre Highlights Guided Tour with Entry Ticket is a small-group shared tour of up to 15 guests. The timed ticket is included, and the tour takes you through the Winged Victory, the Venus de Milo, the Grande Galerie and the Mona Lisa. Expect crowds around the Mona Lisa whatever the hour. You can stay in the museum afterwards. If you have more time, our guides also cover Versailles from Paris in a separate guide, and you can check the season in Paris in October.
In Nice, the Old Nice and Cours Saleya Food Tasting Walk starts at 10:30, which suits a morning arrival. It runs three hours, in a shared small group of up to 12 guests, in English or German. For a longer day, the Èze and Monaco Day Trip from Nice lasts eight hours and is a shared group of up to 8 in a minivan. It covers Èze, the Rock of Monaco and Monte-Carlo. Lunch, garden entry and palace entry are not included. Weather matters on the coast, so see Nice in October and November.

FAQ
Is the train from Paris to Lyon worth it?
Yes. It is fast, city centre to city centre, and far easier than flying for this distance. Book in advance on the official rail site and check the departure station.
Should I fly from Paris to Nice?
For most travellers on a short trip, yes. The flight is far shorter than the train. If you want to see the countryside or avoid airports, the train is an option, but it takes most of a day.
Can I do the Louvre and a Nice tour on the same day?
No. They are in different cities, and the Louvre tour starts at 09:00 in Paris. Keep them on separate days with a travel day between.
Does Helios offer a guide in Lyon?
None of the tours featured here starts in Lyon. If you would like a guide based there, get in touch through an enquiry and we will tell you what is possible.
