Karnak Temple from Luxor: Timing, Tickets and What to See
How long to allow, when to go, what to check before you buy, and why 2 August 2027 is a different kind of visit.

The short answer
Allow two to three hours at Karnak, and go as early in the day as you can. On an ordinary day you generally do not need to book weeks ahead; most visitors buy entry at the site, but check the current arrangements on the official antiquities sources before you travel. The exception is 2 August 2027, when a total solar eclipse crosses Luxor and Karnak becomes a viewing venue. Treat that date as something to plan well in advance.
This guide is for anyone staying in Luxor who wants to see the temple properly rather than rush it between lunch and the hotel pool.
Getting there and the best time to go
Karnak is on the Nile's east bank, a short drive north of Luxor Temple. Heading there from the town centre means going downstream, with the river's flow, since the Nile runs north. Taxis, hotel transfers and organised tours all make the trip.
Go at opening time. Tour coaches build up through the morning, the stone gets hot, and there is very little shade inside. From late spring through early autumn the midday heat is punishing, and the open courts feel like a stone oven. If your only slot is midday in summer, shorten the visit rather than pushing through. Winter mornings are the pleasant option, and our Egypt in October guide covers the shoulder season.
What you actually see, in order
- The avenue of ram-headed sphinxes leading to the First Pylon, the huge unfinished gateway that frames your entrance.
- The Great Court, an open space with a lone surviving column from a lost kiosk and smaller shrines at its edges.
- The Great Hypostyle Hall, the highlight: a forest of enormous papyrus-shaped columns, carved throughout. Give it more time than you think you need, and look up at the remains of the clerestory windows.
- The obelisks beyond the hall, including the tall one raised by Hatshepsut.
- The sacred lake and the giant scarab statue, where guides often pause.
- The Festival Hall and the quieter eastern areas, where crowds thin out.
What is less rewarding: the outer precincts and open-air displays are interesting to specialists but easy to skip if you are tired or the heat is building. Spend your energy on the hall.
How long to allow
Two hours covers the main route at a steady pace. Three lets you sit, read the reliefs and explore the edges. With a guide, the temple makes much more sense, as the layout grew over many centuries and looks like a muddle without explanation. Bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes, because the ground is uneven.
Karnak on eclipse day, 2 August 2027
Luxor sits almost exactly on the eclipse's centre line, with 6 minutes 22 seconds of totality expected between 13:02 and 13:08. Helios runs a Total Solar Eclipse over Luxor trip with viewing from Karnak.
Here is how it works, and the unglamorous parts:
- It is a small-group, shared tour for up to 15 guests, lasting about 7 hours. Pickup from your Luxor hotel is at 08:00, in a shared air-conditioned vehicle.
- You are in position at Karnak about two hours before the partial eclipse begins at 11:40. Totality is at 13:02 and the partial phase ends at 14:26. That is a long time in August heat.
- Entry closes before showtime, so arriving at the pickup point on time matters.
- The trip includes the event ticket, transfers and local team assistance. Food and drinks at the venue are not included, and tips are optional.
- The authorities have not yet announced eclipse-day arrangements. Helios confirms the final programme and price closer to the date, and you pay only then. Tickets are subject to availability, and your booking is confirmed before payment.
Bring your own certified eclipse glasses; looking at the sun without proper protection is dangerous outside totality.
What to verify on official sites before you go
- Current opening hours and any seasonal changes.
- Current ticket categories and how to pay, including whether card payment works at the gate.
- Whether any areas are closed for restoration.
- For 2027, any official announcements about access to Karnak on eclipse day.
