Extra Night in Italy: Florence, Milan or Naples?

What one more evening and one more morning actually unlock in each city, and who should pick which.

If you have one spare night, choose Florence if you want the most art and atmosphere per hour on foot. Choose Naples if you want food, noise and a day trip to Pompeii or the coast. Choose Milan only if your flights already run through it, or if you have a booking for Leonardo's Last Supper. Milan is the least charming of the three at first glance, and it is honest to say so.

This is for travellers who already have a main route, often Rome plus one other stop, and want to know where an extra evening and morning make the biggest difference. Rome is covered elsewhere: see our Colosseum, Forum and Palatine guide.

Florence: the evening and the morning both count

Florence's historic centre is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. That is why an extra night pays off here. Day-trippers see the Duomo in a crowd at midday. You can see it at dusk, then cross the Ponte Vecchio and eat late, when the day groups have left.

The morning is the real prize. Use it for the Uffizi, where the crowds are the main enemy. Our Uffizi Gallery guided tour with entry ticket is a two-hour shared tour for up to 15 guests. Your guide collects the reserved ticket, takes you in at a fixed time and leads you past Giotto, Botticelli's Birth of Venus, Leonardo's Annunciation, Michelangelo's Doni Tondo, Titian and Caravaggio. You can stay inside afterwards.

If you would rather orient yourself first, the Florence walking tour is a two-hour shared walk for up to 15 guests. It runs from the Duomo and Baptistery via Orsanmichele and Piazza della Signoria to the Ponte Vecchio. The stops are seen from outside, and entry to the cathedral, dome, bell tower, Baptistery and museums is not included.

With a full spare day rather than a morning, the Chianti day trip from Florence is an eight-hour shared minivan tour for up to eight guests. It leaves at 09:00 and visits Greve in Chianti, a family-run winery and a hilltop village. Lunch and hotel pickup are not included, and it is a long day.

Naples: appetite first, polish second

Naples is the most intense of the three. An extra night here means an evening in the old centre around Spaccanapoli, a pizza in the city that invented it, and a walk along the seafront as the lights come on. It is loud, crowded and a little rough at the edges. Many travellers love it for exactly that reason; others find it tiring.

The morning unlocks the National Archaeological Museum, which holds much of what was found at Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is also the best preparation if you plan to see the ruins themselves. Pompeii is reachable by the local Circumvesuviana railway and is hot and shadeless in summer, so start early.

Milan: the right answer for the right reason

Milan's evening is the aperitivo: a drink with snacks around the Navigli canals or near the Duomo, then a stroll through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The morning is for the Duomo, including its roof, and for the Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie.

The catch is that the Last Supper is viewed in small timed slots that sell out well ahead. Without one, Milan is mostly a business and design city, and the extra night is harder to justify. It does make sense for early flights, since it is a major air and rail hub.

Practical timing and transport

From north to south the three sit in order: Milan, Florence, Naples. Fast trains link them, with Florence to Milan taking under two hours and Florence to Naples around three. Check exact times and book seats in advance in busy months. Our Italy in October and November guide covers autumn weather and crowds.

The Helios trips above all start in Florence. None of those featured start in Milan or Naples. If you want a guide based in either city, send us an enquiry and tell us your dates and interests.

What to verify before you go

  • Weekly closing days for the Uffizi and Naples's National Archaeological Museum.
  • Last Supper availability and its timed-entry rules.
  • Train timetables and seat reservation requirements.
  • Opening hours for the Duomo, its roof and any churches you plan to enter.

Check these on the official sites, as they change.

FAQ

Which city is best for a single extra night?

Florence, for most first-time visitors. The centre is compact, the evening is walkable, and a morning in the Uffizi fills the next day. Naples suits travellers who prefer energy to polish.

Is one night enough in Naples?

It is enough for an evening in the old centre and a morning at the archaeological museum. It is not enough for Pompeii and the coast as well, unless you accept a rushed day.

Do I need to book the Uffizi in advance?

Booking ahead is wise because queues can be long. Our Uffizi tour includes a reserved entry ticket and a fixed entry time with a guide.

Does Helios offer tours in Milan or Naples?

The trips featured here all start in Florence. For a guide based in Milan or Naples, send an enquiry and we will tell you what we can arrange.
