France 7 Day Itinerary: Paris and the Riviera Without the Rush
Three nights in Paris, one train day and three nights in Nice is what a week in France can hold, and this guide explains what to leave out.
The short answer: two bases, not four
In seven days, France works best as three nights in Paris and four in Nice, joined by one daytime train. Add Normandy, the Loire and Provence and you will spend the week on platforms and in hotel lobbies. This plan is for first-time visitors who want one great city and one stretch of coast, and who accept leaving the rest for another trip.
The route, day by day
Days 1 to 3: Paris
Day 1: Arrive and keep it light. Walk the Seine and the Île de la Cité, and have an early night.
Day 2: Choose one big museum, the Louvre or the Musée d’Orsay, not both. Spend the afternoon in the Marais or Montmartre. Museums close on different weekdays, so check before you fix the order.
Day 3: Go to Versailles. It is a big, busy palace, and the gardens take real time to walk. Our Versailles day trip guide covers tickets, timing and the RER C. If palaces do not move you, spend the day in Paris instead and nothing is lost.
Day 4: the travel day
Take a morning TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon to Nice-Ville. The direct journey takes roughly six hours, so you arrive in the afternoon. Treat it as a travel day with a sea view at the end: walk the Promenade des Anglais and eat early. A flight is faster in the air, but airport time brings the total close to the train.
Days 5 to 7: Nice and the coast
Day 5: Start with the two-hour Old Nice, Promenade des Anglais and Castle Hill walking tour. It starts at 10:00, runs as a shared small group of up to 15, and ends with the view from Castle Hill (stairs, or the free lift). Spend the afternoon on the pebble beach.
Day 6: Take the Èze and Monaco day trip from Nice. It leaves at 09:00 and lasts eight hours. It is a shared small group of up to 8 in a minivan, with a corniche viewpoint, Èze village, Monaco-Ville and Monte-Carlo. Expect steep lanes in Èze and crowds on the Rock of Monaco. Entry to the Èze garden, the Prince’s Palace and the casino, plus lunch, are not included.
Day 7: The Old Nice and Cours Saleya food tasting walk starts at 10:30 and lasts three hours. The tastings add up to a full meal, so skip breakfast. It is a shared small group of up to 12. If your flight leaves in the morning, do this walk on day 5 and swap the order.
Both walks are given in English or German. For seasonal conditions, see Nice in October and November and Paris in October.
The slower alternative: one base in Nice
If a six-hour train day feels like a waste, spend all seven nights in Nice. You get unhurried mornings, the beach, and the three tours above spread across the week. Add easy rail days along the coast, and keep Paris for another trip.
The tradeoff is honest: you see no Paris, no Versailles and nothing of inland France. The Riviera is also a one-flavour week. Beaches, old towns and views are lovely, but if you want museums and big-city energy, the two-base plan is better.
What to leave for another trip
- The Loire châteaux, Normandy and Mont-Saint-Michel: each needs its own day or two, with long transfers.
- Bordeaux, Alsace and the Provence interior: better as a second trip with a car or a slower rail route.
- Lyon: a good stop on the way south, but it costs a night, which this week cannot spare.
What to verify before you book
- Train times and seat availability on the official rail operator’s site, plus any strike notices.
- Timed-entry rules and weekly closing days for your chosen museum and for Versailles.
- Current Helios availability, departure points and meeting details on each trip page.
- Whether your passport needs a visa or travel authorisation for France.
France 7 day itinerary FAQ
Is seven days enough for France?
It is enough for one city and one region, not the whole country. Paris plus Nice is a sensible pairing.
Should I fly or take the train from Paris to Nice?
The train takes roughly six hours but runs centre to centre. A flight is shorter in the air, though airport time narrows the gap. Pick by price and schedule.
Can I do the Èze and Monaco trip and a Nice walk on the same day?
No. The day trip leaves at 09:00 and lasts eight hours, while the walks start at 10:00 and 10:30. Put them on separate days.
Are the Nice tours private?
No. All three Helios tours here run as shared small groups, with up to 8, 12 or 15 guests depending on the tour.
