An Egypt Five-City Itinerary: Hurghada to Aswan

How to link the Red Sea, Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria and Aswan without spending the whole trip in transit.

An Egypt Five-City Itinerary: Hurghada to Aswan

The short answer: yes, Hurghada, Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria and Aswan fit into one trip, but you need roughly ten to twelve days. Alexandria works as a day visit from Cairo; the other four deserve overnight stays. In under a week you will spend more time in airports and cars than in temples.

The order that works is Hurghada, then Cairo with Alexandria as a day out, a flight to Luxor, and finally Aswan. From Luxor the route runs south to Aswan, against the Nile’s northward flow, without much backtracking.

Who this route suits

It suits first-time visitors who want the pyramids, the temples and some sea in one go, and who can tolerate early starts. It does not suit anyone who dislikes transfers. If you only have a week, drop Alexandria or Hurghada rather than rush everything. Our guide to Cairo or Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada explains why those are very long days.

A note on where Helios fits: the featured trips cover different portions of Egypt. Check each itinerary before assuming it follows this five-city route. If you need a guide based in Cairo or Alexandria, send us an enquiry and we will discuss the options.

The route, stop by stop

Hurghada: 2 nights, overnight

Hurghada is a resort strip on the Red Sea, not a historic city. Come for reef snorkelling and a slow first (or last) few days. Do not expect charm in the town itself. It makes the most sense if you are flying in there anyway. Otherwise start in Cairo and cut a stop.

Cairo: 3 nights, overnight

Fly from Hurghada; the flight is short, whereas the road is a long, dull day. Give Cairo three nights: Giza and Saqqara one day, the Grand Egyptian Museum another, and Islamic Cairo with Khan El-Khalili and El-Muizz Street a third. Expect heavy traffic, noise and touts at the big sites. Mornings are calmer, and summer afternoons are punishing.

Alexandria: a day trip from Cairo

Alexandria is a Mediterranean port with a faded grandeur. The Citadel of Qaitbay, Pompey's Pillar and the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa are the headline sights, and the seafront is good for lunch. It is a pleasant contrast to Cairo but not a pharaonic highlight, and the ancient city is largely gone. Trains and roads from Cairo take a few hours each way, so a day visit is enough. Stay overnight only if you want a slower pace.

Luxor: 2 to 3 nights, overnight

Fly from Cairo. Luxor needs two full days: Karnak and Luxor Temple on the east bank, then the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the Colossi of Memnon on the west. Start early, because the west bank is exposed and hot by late morning for much of the year.

Aswan: 2 nights, overnight

Aswan is calmer, with Philae, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. Abu Simbel is a day visit from here, with a pre-dawn departure and a long drive each way. It is worth the early start, but it is tiring.

Flying, rail, road or boat

  • Hurghada to Cairo: fly. The road is possible but long.
  • Cairo to Alexandria: train or road, as a day return.
  • Cairo to Luxor: fly for speed. An overnight sleeper train saves a hotel night but is basic, so check current operators and timetables.
  • Luxor to Aswan: the scenic choice is a Nile cruise, with stops at Edfu and Kom Ombo. A cruise takes several nights, so it replaces hotel nights rather than adding to them. The faster options are road or rail.
  • Aswan home: flights are often routed through Cairo. Check schedules early.

If your dates are flexible, our guide to Egypt in October covers when the heat eases.

Optional extras in Upper Egypt

Two dated events may be worth planning a route around. The Abu Simbel Sun Festival on 22 October 2026 departs from Aswan as a private transfer with an entry ticket. Tickets are subject to availability, and we confirm your booking before payment. For more on what to expect, read what dawn really looks like at Abu Simbel.

On 2 August 2027, the total solar eclipse over Luxor runs as a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests, viewed from Karnak Temple, with totality at 13:02. The price is indicative, because the authorities have not yet announced eclipse-day arrangements.

If you would rather have a longer, fully private journey than build this yourself, our 14-day private Egypt tour starts from Hurghada and includes a five-star Nile cruise and Abu Simbel. It is a different trip from the route above.

What to verify before you go

Check the official sources for current museum and temple opening hours, ticket rules (especially the Grand Egyptian Museum), domestic flight and train timetables, and your government's travel advice. Confirm timetables close to departure, as schedules change.

Egypt five-city itinerary FAQ

How many days do I need for five cities?

About ten to twelve days is comfortable. Eight is possible if you skip Hurghada or treat Alexandria as a half-day.

Is Alexandria worth an overnight stay?

Usually not. A day trip from Cairo covers the main sights, unless you want a slow seaside break.

Should I fly or take the train between Cairo and Luxor?

Fly if time matters. The sleeper train suits travellers who value the experience and can sleep on a moving train.

Can Helios arrange a guide in Cairo?

The linked trips are different itineraries and do not guarantee a Cairo-based guide. Send an enquiry with your dates and we can discuss local guide options.
