Egypt 7 Day Itinerary: What Fits and What to Leave for Later
A week in Egypt works with three bases, Cairo, Luxor and the Red Sea, and it falls apart if you add a fourth.

Seven days in Egypt comfortably fits three bases: Cairo, Luxor and the Red Sea coast. It does not fit Aswan and Abu Simbel as well, and trying to squeeze them in turns the week into airport lounges. If you want pyramids, pharaonic temples and a day or two on the water, this route works. If you want to see all of Egypt, it doesn't, and no week-long plan will.
Who this route is for
First-time visitors who want the headline sights without a fortnight to spend. You should be happy with early starts (several are unavoidable), with heat that can be strong even outside summer, and with moving hotels twice. If you hate packing and unpacking, jump to the slower alternative below.
The route, day by day
- Day 1, Cairo: arrive, rest, keep the evening light.
- Day 2, Cairo and Giza: the pyramids and Sphinx early, before the heat and tour buses peak, then the Grand Egyptian Museum or Islamic Cairo in the afternoon. Pick one; both is a lot.
- Day 3, fly to Luxor: take a morning flight south. Luxor sits upstream of Cairo, so you are travelling against the Nile's northward flow. Spend the afternoon at Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank.
- Day 4, Luxor's West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon. Begin early; the valley has little shade.
- Day 5, Luxor to the Red Sea: the road to Hurghada crosses the Eastern Desert and takes roughly four hours. Treat the day as a transfer and a swim.
- Days 6 and 7, Hurghada: reef time, then fly home.
Making the Red Sea days count
If you want a full day afloat, the Dolphin House snorkeling trip is an 8-hour outing that starts with a 07:30 hotel pickup. It is a shared tour of up to 8 guests, with about 1.5 hours of sailing each way, one dolphin stop and two reef stops. Dolphins are wild and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
For a gentler last morning, the glass-bottom boat trip takes about two hours, with departures at 09:00, 11:00 and 15:00. It is a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests. You watch the reef from an air-conditioned underwater cabin, and the guided snorkel stop is optional. Bring a light jacket, as the cabin is cool.
What to leave for another trip
- Aswan and Abu Simbel: they add a long journey south for a morning at one temple. See our piece on the Abu Simbel sun festival for what dawn there really involves.
- Alexandria, Sinai and the western oases: each deserves its own days.
- A Nile cruise: cruises between Luxor and Aswan need more time than this week allows.
- Both big Cairo museums plus Islamic Cairo in one day: you will remember none of it.
The slower alternative: one base, one big day
Skip Cairo and the hotel changes. Stay in Hurghada for the week, with a few sea days and one long Luxor day. The trade-off is blunt: you lose the pyramids entirely, and the Luxor day is gruelling.
Helios's Luxor sunrise balloon, Valley of the Kings and Karnak trip collects you from your hotel at around midnight. It involves about four hours' driving each way, and you are back around 17:00, a 17-hour day. It runs as a private tour for your party only, with an Egyptologist guide in English, German or French. The balloon flight lasts about 45 minutes, is weather-dependent, and the balloon portion is refunded if the operator cancels. Tutankhamun's and Seti I's tombs are not included. Note that this trip starts from Hurghada; if you are already sleeping in Luxor it does not apply.

Timing and transport
Autumn and spring are the easiest seasons for sightseeing; our Egypt in October guide shows what a typical shoulder-season week feels like. Book domestic flights before hotels, since the Cairo-to-Luxor leg fixes the rest of the plan. Add a buffer for airport time. Flying into Cairo and out of Hurghada avoids backtracking.
Combining Egypt with the Gulf? See Egypt and Dubai in one trip, but not in this same week.
What to verify on official sites
- Visa and e-visa rules for your passport.
- Opening days, hours and ticketing for the Giza plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
- Current domestic flight schedules and the road conditions between Luxor and Hurghada.
- Balloon operator rules, including age and weight limits.
Egypt 7 day itinerary FAQ
Can I see Cairo, Luxor and Aswan in seven days?
Technically yes, but you would spend a large share of the week in transit. Dropping Aswan lets you see Cairo and Luxor properly.
Is the Luxor day trip from Hurghada worth it?
It is worth it if Luxor is your only chance to see the temples and tombs. Expect a midnight start, about eight hours of driving in total and a tiring day.
Are the Hurghada boat trips private?
No. The Dolphin House trip and the glass-bottom boat are both shared small-group tours. The Luxor trip is private.
Should I book everything in advance?
Book flights, the Luxor balloon and any trip you cannot move. Leave one day loose for weather or tiredness.
