Würzburg to Nuremberg: Train, Stops and When to Go Direct
The journey between the two Franconian cities is short, so the real decision is whether to add a stop or simply go.
If you are moving from Würzburg to Nuremberg, the plain answer is this: take a direct train, leave in the morning, and treat the journey as a transfer rather than a sightseeing leg. On fast services it takes roughly an hour, and Nuremberg's main station sits at the edge of the Old Town. The only stop that earns its place is Bamberg, and it is a detour, not a stop on the way.
Who this is for
This guide is for travellers linking two or three Franconian cities, usually on a Germany trip that also takes in Munich, Frankfurt or Rothenburg. You are choosing between going straight there and adding one more town. For wider context, see our Germany travel tips for first-time visitors.
The route and the direction
Würzburg lies on the Main, north-west of Nuremberg. Going to Nuremberg means heading south-east across Franconia, away from the Main valley. A direct train does not pass through any town you would plan a day around, and the same goes for the motorway if you drive. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is not on the way, and reaching it by train means changing. If it is on your list, read our Rothenburg guide and give it its own day.
Train or car
The train is the easier choice. Both stations are a short walk from their Old Towns, you avoid city-centre parking, and you can read the timetable rather than the traffic. Fast and regional services both run, and the regional ones take noticeably longer. Check which one you have booked, because the difference matters on a tight day.
A car makes sense only if you are already driving a loop through Franconia. Parking in both Old Towns is limited, and the motorway between the cities can slow down at busy times.
The one stop worth making: Bamberg
Bamberg is a UNESCO-listed Old Town and a beer town, and it is the only detour I would recommend. It does not sit on the direct line, so you travel Würzburg to Bamberg, then Bamberg to Nuremberg, and both legs are served by trains. That adds hours, not minutes. Our Bamberg guide covers what to see. If you are carrying heavy bags, check luggage storage at the station before you commit.
Do not squeeze it into an afternoon with a fixed commitment in Nuremberg. Bamberg is pleasant to wander, and you will want slack in the day.
When a direct transfer is more sensible
- You have one night in each city. Go direct and spend your energy in the cities.
- You have a booked walk in Nuremberg. Our Nuremberg walk starts at 14:00, so a morning departure from Würzburg leaves a buffer.
- Your bags are heavy. Two changes with luggage is a poor trade.
- It is winter. Short daylight makes a detour feel rushed. Christmas market dates are covered in our Nuremberg Christmas market plan.
Pairing the journey with a walk at each end
The neatest plan puts a guided walk on either side of the train. In Würzburg, the Old Town walking tour covers the market square, the Old Main Bridge and St Kilian's Cathedral in about 90 minutes, in a shared group of up to 15. If you want wine, the wine walk on the Old Main Bridge is a shared small group of up to eight, with three 0.1-litre tastings. It runs in English or German, and wine is served from age 16. Neither includes hotel pickup. For background on the city, see our Würzburg travel guide and the Franconian wine guide.
In Nuremberg, the Old Town walk from the Hauptmarkt to Dürer's House is a shared group of up to 15, led in English. It is on cobbles at an easy pace and does not include entry to the castle, Dürer's House or museums. More context is in our Nuremberg travel guide.
What to verify before you travel
- Current timetables and engineering works on the Deutsche Bahn site or app, since weekend closures happen.
- Whether your ticket or rail pass covers the train type you choose, and whether a seat reservation is advisable.
- Tour start times for the Würzburg walks, which you confirm at booking.
- Opening hours for anything you plan to enter, on each attraction's own website.
FAQ
How long does it take to get from Würzburg to Nuremberg?
On fast direct trains, roughly an hour. Regional trains take longer. Check the exact time for your date, as services change.
Is there anything worth stopping at between the two cities?
Not on the direct line. Bamberg is the worthwhile stop, but it needs a separate train route and adds real time to the day.
Can I visit Rothenburg on the way?
It is not practical as a casual stop. It needs a change of trains and deserves its own day.
Can I do a Würzburg walk and a Nuremberg walk on the same day?
It is possible with a morning Würzburg walk and a train before the 14:00 Nuremberg start, but confirm the Würzburg start time first. It makes for a full day, and one walk per city is more relaxed.
Does Helios arrange the transfer between the cities?
The trips listed here are walking tours within each city. They do not include transport between Würzburg and Nuremberg.
