Louvre Highlights Guided Tour with Entry Ticket: A Visitor Guide
What a three-hour, small-group highlights tour covers, who it suits and how to prepare for the world's largest museum.
The short answer
If this is your first visit and you have one morning, a guided route is the sensible way to see the Louvre. The museum is vast and the signage will not do the prioritising for you. The Paris Louvre Highlights Guided Tour with Entry Ticket is a shared small-group tour for up to 15 guests, starting at 09:00. Your timed ticket is included, and a Helios guide leads you to the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the Italian paintings, the Mona Lisa and the large French canvases.
It is not for you if you want to drift through the galleries at your own pace from the first minute, or if your goal is a temporary exhibition. Those are not included.
What the tour covers, in order
The tour is listed at 3 hours. The guided part is two and a half hours, and the itinerary breaks it into six stops.
Pyramid and the medieval Louvre
You meet your guide, go in and start below ground, at the foundations of the old fortress. This explains the building before you see what is in it: a medieval fortress, then a royal palace, then a public museum.
Venus de Milo
About 20 minutes with the best-known Greek statue in the collection, and the story of how it reached Paris.
Winged Victory of Samothrace
You climb the Daru staircase to the headless winged figure at the top. It is one of the few works in the museum whose placement is as dramatic as the object.
Grande Galerie
The longest stop, about 30 minutes, walking past Italian Renaissance paintings by Leonardo, Raphael and Titian.
Mona Lisa
About 25 minutes in the Salle des États, standing before Leonardo's portrait.
French paintings
You finish among the big nineteenth-century French canvases in the Denon wing.
The honest bit about the Mona Lisa
The painting is smaller than most people expect. It hangs behind protective glass in a busy room, and you will be looking over other visitors' phones. A guide cannot clear the crowd. What a guide can do is get you there by the shortest route and tell you why the painting is worth the effort. Go in with that expectation and it is a good moment. Go in expecting a quiet encounter and you will be disappointed.
Who should book it, and who should not
- Book it if you are a first-timer, short on time, or put off by the scale of the place.
- Book it if you want context. The fortress-to-palace-to-museum story is part of the tour.
- Think twice if you would rather browse one department in depth. Three hours at highlight pace is a sampler, not a study.
- Think twice if the 09:00 start is a problem. You also need to get to the museum yourself, as hotel pickup and drop-off are not included.
When the tour ends you can stay in the museum as long as you like. That is the best way to cover the Louvre: follow the guide to the famous works, then spend the rest of your time on whatever caught your eye on the way.
How to prepare
- Check your booking confirmation for the exact meeting point and give yourself time to arrive. The tour starts with your guide, and your entry is timed.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You will be on your feet for the whole tour, including a staircase.
- Eat beforehand. Food and drinks are not included, and tips are not either.
- Expect a security check at the entrance, as at most major museums, and travel light.
- Choose your language. The guide leads in English or German, or in your language on request. Audio headsets are provided when the group needs them.
