A Day in Nice Built Around the Old Nice Food Tasting Walk
How to fit a three-hour tasting walk into a realistic day in Nice, and what to do before and after it.
Is the food walk worth building a day around?
Yes, if you want to understand what Nice actually eats and have lunch finished by early afternoon. The Old Nice and Cours Saleya Food Tasting Walk starts at 10:30 and lasts three hours. It is a shared small-group tour of up to 12 guests, led by a Helios guide in English or German. The tastings are meant to add up to a full meal.
It is not for everyone. You spend three hours on your feet, mostly eating standing up or at small counters, in lanes that can be crowded. If you want a long seated lunch with a menu, book a restaurant instead. The tour does not include hotel pickup, so you get yourself to the start.
Before 10:30: arrive hungry, but not starving
The first stop on the itinerary is Place Masséna, the big square at the edge of the old town, and you have about ten minutes there with your guide. Get there a little early. Have a coffee if you like, but skip a proper breakfast: the first tastings come within the hour, and the food is substantial.
The walk, in the order you meet it
Cours Saleya market (about 40 minutes)
You walk through the flower and produce stalls and taste olives and tapenade. This is the busiest part of the morning, and the market is at its liveliest earlier in the day, so expect to dodge other visitors and shoppers. Stalls change character on some days of the week (Mondays are different from the rest), so check locally if the market is the part you care about most.
The lanes of Old Nice (about 50 minutes)
This is the heart of the tour. Local bakers serve socca, the chickpea pancake from wood-fired ovens, and pissaladière, the onion and olive tart. Socca is best eaten hot and straight away, so it is a good test of whether this style of tour suits you: you eat at once, with your fingers, wherever you are standing.
Place Rossetti (about 30 minutes)
At the cathedral square you stop for something sweet, such as the city's chard pie. If you expect it to taste like a classic dessert, adjust your expectations: it is a distinctive local sweet, and your guide will explain it.
The final tasting (about 40 minutes)
The walk finishes with pan bagnat, petits farcis and a glass of local wine for adults, or a soft drink. Along the way you also taste olive oil. Your guide explains where each dish comes from and how people in Nice still eat it.
After the walk: what to do independently
You finish around 1:30 pm, well fed. Do not book a lunch. Use the afternoon for things that suit a full stomach:
- Castle Hill: a short climb from the end of the old town to the city's best viewpoint. Take the steps slowly after the tastings.
- The seafront: walk along the Promenade des Anglais and sit on the pebble beach. Bring shoes for the stones if you plan to swim.
- A slow rest: in hot weather, the early afternoon is for shade or your hotel. Nice in summer is hot and busy.
Come back to Old Nice in the evening to find the streets you walked, and perhaps a place you noticed during the tour. A light dinner is plenty. If you are visiting outside high summer, our guide to Nice in October and November explains what to expect from the weather and the beach.
What to know before you book
- The walk is on foot and stays within Nice; it is not a day trip out of the city.
- Tastings are included. Anything extra you buy, plus tips, is not.
- The supplied details do not describe dietary adaptations, so if you have allergies or restrictions, ask before booking rather than assuming.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the old town lanes are narrow and the paving uneven.
