Nemo Island, Hurghada: the honest guide to the cheapest boat day

Two snorkelling stops, a beach, and clownfish that square up to you

Nemo Island is the cheapest full day on the water you can book out of Hurghada, and it is the one most first-time visitors end up on. It is also the one with the biggest gap between what the name suggests and what you actually get — so here is the honest version, from the boat we run ourselves.

Start with the name

There is no Egyptian place called Nemo Island. The name belongs to the boat trade, and it was earned: the reef here is full of clownfish, darting in and out of the anemones they live in, close enough to the surface that you can watch the whole business with your face in the water and your feet not far from the ladder.

That is genuinely what people remember. Clownfish are territorial and they do not run away — they come out and square up to you, an inch and a half of fish defending its anemone against a human. Children find this extremely funny.

What the day is

Eight hours, door to door, and most of it is on the water.

Pick-up from your hotel and out to the marina.
The cruise out, which is a real part of the day rather than dead time — open water, the coast going past, and usually an hour or so to sit on the deck.
Two snorkelling stops over the reefs. Not one. This matters: the second stop is where people who were nervous at the first one actually start looking around.
A couple of hours of beach time — sand, shallow water, somewhere to lie down.
Lunch on board, plus drinks, guide, equipment and life jackets.

If you cannot swim

You can still do this, and a lot of people on any given boat cannot swim well.

The boat anchors in shallow, calm water. There is a life jacket for anybody who wants one, and floating face-down is the whole technique — you do not need to swim anywhere to see the reef, because the reef is directly underneath you. Plenty of guests never let go of the ladder at all and still see everything.

Tell the crew when you board rather than at the moment you are standing at the top of the steps. They will stay near you, and that is a different day from working it out alone in the water.

This is one of the better Red Sea days for a family, because the beach time breaks up the boat time and the water at the stops is shallow and still. Under-sixes travel free; six to eleven pay half; twelve and over pay the adult fare. Tell us the ages when you book — it decides the seats, the vehicle and the size of the equipment, and a mask that does not fit is the single fastest way to put a child off snorkelling for good.

Nemo, or one of the others?

Hurghada has several island days and they are not interchangeable.

Nemo is the value option and the busiest. Best reef-to-price ratio, biggest boats, most people.
Eden Island is the quiet one — fewer boats, a sandbar, and a day with less going on in it. Worth the difference if crowds are what you are trying to avoid.
Paradise Island sits in between and is usually done by speedboat, which cuts the travel and shortens the day.

If the reef is the point, Nemo or Eden. If lying on a nice beach is the point, one of the developed three.

What else is down there

The clownfish are the headline and they are not the whole reef. Across the two stops you will reliably see:

Sergeant majors in numbers — the striped ones that follow the boat hoping for bread. Feeding them is discouraged and the crew will say so.
Parrotfish, which you hear before you see: the crunching is them biting coral, and the sand on the island is partly what comes out the other end.
Butterflyfish in pairs. They mate for life and they swim like it.
Blue-spotted rays on the sand between coral heads, and the occasional moray with its head out of a hole looking furious, which is simply what their faces do.

What you will not see from a snorkel is anything large. The big animals on this coast are deeper and further out, and anyone promising turtles and dolphins at a reef stop is selling you a maybe as a certainty.

When to go

The Red Sea is warm enough to snorkel all year, and the months are not equal.

April to June and September to November are the best of it — water in the mid-twenties, air that does not punish you on deck, and the calmest mornings.
July and August are hot enough that the boat becomes the problem rather than the water. Doable, and the deck shade matters more than anything else about the trip.
December to March the water drops to around twenty-one or twenty-two degrees. That is cold after twenty minutes if you are thin or you float still. Ask for a shorty wetsuit; in winter we carry them.

Whatever the month, book it early in your holiday rather than on the last day. If it blows out — and it does — you want a second chance at it.

The honest downsides

It is the budget boat, and it is busy. That is how the price works. If you want a quiet deck and eight people, this is not that trip and you should pay for the speedboat instead.

The equipment is standard issue. Masks and fins are fine and clean; they are not personally fitted. Bring your own mask if you own one — it is the single upgrade that makes the most difference to any snorkelling day anywhere.

Eight hours is a long day in the sun. There is shade on board, and people still get burnt on the boat rather than in the water, because the breeze makes it feel cooler than it is.

Boat days do get called off, and the decision is not ours — the coastguard closes the port when the sea is above a certain state, and when that happens nothing leaves the marina, from any operator, at any price.

It is worth knowing how that is handled before you book rather than after. With us a port closure means you are moved to another day if you have one, or refunded if you do not; you are not offered a credit note against a holiday you are about to leave. Anybody who will not answer that question plainly is telling you what happens.

Practical notes

Reef-safe sun cream, and put it on before you board rather than at the stop — most of what washes off does so in the first ten minutes.
Something to cover your back. A t-shirt in the water is the standard fix and nobody will look at you twice.
Wind decides the day. The Red Sea gets choppy in the afternoon more often than in the morning, and if you are unsure about seasickness, take something before you leave the hotel rather than when you start to feel it.
Cash for the small stuff — tips for the crew and anything from the on-board bar.

Booked with a bit of realism about what it is, it is a very good day and the best-value one on this coast.
