Orange Bay, Mahmya or Giftun — the honest comparison

Practical notes that apply to all three

• The national park fee is separate. It is collected per person and it is not a scam; it funds the park. Bring cash for it.
• The crossing takes about an hour by group boat, considerably less by speedboat. If you are prone to seasickness, the speedboat is the kinder option in choppy conditions — it is faster and it is over sooner.
• Bring a rash vest. There is no shade in the water and the reflection off white sand doubles what your skin receives.
• Afternoon wind is normal here. The sea is flattest in the morning. A trip that leaves early is a better trip.
• Take cash for extras. Drinks beyond what's included, water sports, and the fee all want small notes.

When to go, and why the month changes the answer

The islands are a year-round trip, but they are not the same trip in every month, and the variable that matters is wind rather than temperature.

March to May and September to November are the best windows: water warm enough to stay in for hours, air temperatures that make a full day on an unshaded beach pleasant rather than punishing, and generally settled seas.

June to August is hot — regularly over 38 °C on land — and the beaches offer very little natural shade. The water is at its warmest, around 29 °C, which is glorious for snorkelling and useless for cooling down. If you go in high summer, take the earliest departure available and treat the middle of the day as time under an umbrella, not on the sand.

December to February brings the sharpest light and the emptiest beaches, but the water drops to roughly 22 °C. That is perfectly swimmable in a shorty wetsuit and genuinely cold without one after twenty minutes. Ask whether a wetsuit is included; on many group trips it is a paid extra, and on a January day it is the difference between an hour in the water and ten minutes.

The other seasonal factor is wind. This coast is reliably breezy from late morning onwards for much of the year, and a windy afternoon means chop, reduced visibility on the reef, and a bouncier crossing home. It is the single strongest argument for early departures, in any month.

What is included, and what is not

Trip descriptions vary, so check rather than assume. Typically included: hotel transfer, the boat, lunch on board or at the beach, soft drinks or water, snorkelling mask and fins, and a guide. Typically not included:

• The national park fee — collected per person, in cash, on the day.
• Wetsuits, especially in winter.
• Alcohol and speciality drinks at the beach clubs.
• Water sports — banana boat, parasailing, jet ski.
• Underwater camera hire, where it is offered at all.
• Tips for the crew, which are customary and modest.

None of this is a trap; it is simply how the day is priced. But it means the cheapest advertised island trip and the actual cost of your day can differ by a fair margin, and it is worth doing that arithmetic before you compare two offers on headline price alone.

With small children, the answer changes

The comparison above holds for adults and teenagers. With a four-year-old it reshuffles completely, because the things that decide a good day stop being the reef and the lunch and become shade, walking distance and how long the boat takes.

• Shade is the deciding factor, not the beach. Ask specifically whether your booking includes a covered sunbed rather than an open one. On a 38 °C day the difference between shade and no shade is the difference between staying until four and leaving at noon in tears.
• Entry matters more than the reef. Small children need to walk in gradually from sand. A jetty entry straight into deep water over coral is a non-starter, however good the snorkelling is.
• Count the boat time, both ways. Ninety minutes each way is three hours of a small child's day spent sitting still. The nearer option is usually the better one even if the further one is objectively the prettier beach.
• Check there is real food, not just a set lunch. Buffets suit fussy eaters; a fixed plate of fish does not.
• Bring the float you trust. Boat armbands are shared, sun-perished, and sized for someone else's child.

Our honest recommendation for families with under-sixes is often none of the three. A half-day on a nearby house reef with a sandy entry — back at the hotel for lunch and a nap — is a better day for everyone than a full-day island trip that ends with two exhausted parents. The islands are wonderful at eight years old and hard work at three.

The bit nobody compares: the boat

All three of these are boat days, and the crossing is a real part of them — 45 minutes to Giftun, longer to Mahmya, longer still if the sea is up. It gets left out of every comparison, including, until now, this one.

If you are prone to seasickness, the Red Sea is usually kind but not always. Take the tablet before boarding — an hour before, not when you start feeling it, by which point nothing works. Sit at the back of the boat, low down and outside in the air; the enclosed front seats with the best view are the worst place to be. Watch the horizon, not your phone. Reading, and looking down at a screen, is what turns queasiness into a ruined day.

The wind decides more than the forecast does. Hurghada gets sustained northerlies, most often in spring, and a windy day means a bouncy crossing or a cancelled one. If the sea looks lively from the shore, it will feel considerably livelier an hour out.

Practical things that help everyone:

• Get to the boat early and pick your seat rather than taking what is left.
• Sunburn happens on the crossing, in the wind, where you cannot feel it. That is when to put the shirt on, not when you arrive.
• Take a dry bag or at least a sealed plastic one. Spray reaches the seats on a lively day, and phones do not survive it.
• Ask what time the boat leaves the island. Missing it is not a small problem.

So which one?

If you want a comfortable, well-serviced, photogenic beach day and you don't mind sharing it — Orange Bay.

If you want the island itself, reef you can swim to, and a calmer register — Mahmya.

If what you actually pictured was clear water and coral, not loungers — book a boat, not a beach. That is the mistake we see most often, and it is the easiest one to avoid.
