Alfama and Lisbon Old Town Walk: A Practical Guide

What the three-hour route covers, where it gets steep, and how to choose between the small-group and private formats.

Is a guided walk through Alfama worth it? If you have one morning or afternoon in Lisbon and want to understand the old town rather than just get lost in it, yes. Alfama's lanes are confusing, steep and often unsigned, and a guide turns them into a readable story. If you would rather wander slowly with a map and a coffee, you can do that too, and you will still enjoy it.

Helios runs a Alfama and Lisbon old town walk that lasts 3 hours, starting and ending in Lisbon. It runs in two formats: a shared small group of up to 12 guests, or a private tour for just your party. Both follow the same route.

The route, in the order you meet it

Praça do Comércio

The walk begins at Lisbon's great riverside square, open on one side to the Tagus. The area was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, which is why the grid of streets behind it feels so different from the tangle you are heading towards. It is flat, wide and a good place to ask questions and take photographs before the climbing starts.

Sé Cathedral

Next is the Sé, Lisbon's cathedral. Its heavy, fortress-like Romanesque look is the opposite of the square you just left. It is one of the oldest and most solid-looking churches in the city. The yellow trams often rattle past its front, so the pavement here can be busy.

Alfama lanes

This is the heart of the walk. Alfama is the old hillside quarter above the river, and much of its medieval street pattern survived the earthquake. Expect narrow stairways, laundry overhead, tiled façades and sudden small squares. A guide helps you see what you would otherwise walk past.

Portas do Sol

The route ends at the Portas do Sol viewpoint, looking over Alfama's rooftops to the river. By now you have climbed to it, so the view feels earned.

The unflattering parts

  • It is hilly. Alfama is built on a slope. Expect steps and gradients, and take it slowly if you have knee or mobility trouble. Tell us before booking so the team can plan around it.
  • The paving is slippery. Lisbon's polished stone cobbles are treacherous in wet weather and not kind to smooth soles or heels. Wear shoes with grip.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and there is little shade on the climb. Bring water and a hat in warm months, and consider an earlier slot.
  • Crowds gather at viewpoints and on tram routes. Keep bags zipped and in front of you.
  • Three hours is a sampler. You will not see museums, interiors or the whole of Alfama. This is an orientation, not a deep dive.

Small group or private?

The shared tour has up to 12 guests, which suits solo travellers and couples comfortable with a set pace. The private format suits families, anyone with mobility needs, or anyone who wants to linger or skip stops. The route stays the same either way. We confirm the final price in your quote, so compare the two quotes rather than guessing.

What to prepare

This is a flexible, locally guided route. Send us your date, group size and interests, and the team checks guide availability and returns a precise plan and quote. We confirm your guide, access, transport and final price before booking, so you know the meeting arrangements before you commit.

Included is route planning and local guide matching on request. Admission, transport, food and tastings are not included unless your quote says so, so check the quote if you want to go inside a monument or stop for a tasting.

Bring comfortable shoes, water, sun protection and a light layer. If you are visiting in autumn, see our guide to Portugal in October for weather and daylight. If you have a spare day, the Sintra day trip from Lisbon pairs well with a walk like this.
