Hurghada Glass-Bottom Boat: A Dry Day on the Red Sea Reef

A two-hour outing to see coral and tropical fish from an air-conditioned cabin, with the rest of your Hurghada day left free.

Hurghada Glass-Bottom Boat: A Dry Day on the Red Sea Reef

Short answer: if you want to see the Red Sea's coral and fish but would rather not swim, the Helios glass-bottom boat trip does the job. It suits families, non-swimmers and anyone who wants a short, easy outing. It runs as a small-group shared tour for up to 15 guests, lasts about two hours, and leaves at 09:00, 11:00 or 15:00. It is not a full-day excursion, so you can plan the rest of the day yourself.

It is not a substitute for a day of proper snorkelling or diving. You watch the reef through windows, and the snorkel stop is a short add-on. Think of it as a good first look at the reef, not the whole Red Sea.

How the two hours work

The trip goes from Hurghada to Hurghada, and the reef is out at sea, not in the city. The order is simple:

  1. Air-conditioned transfer from your hotel to Hurghada Marina (about 15 minutes).
  2. Boat ride out to the reef on the Royal Sea Scope (about 15 minutes).
  3. About 45 minutes in the underwater observation cabin, watching coral and reef fish through wide windows.
  4. A guided snorkel stop of 30–40 minutes for anyone who wants to get in. Staying on board is fine.
  5. Back to the marina (about 15 minutes), then the transfer to your hotel.

The listed times add up to a little over two hours, so treat "about two hours" as the plan and confirm your exact pickup time when you book.

Which departure to choose

09:00 gets you back with most of the day ahead. It is the easiest slot if you are travelling with young children who tire by the afternoon.

11:00 is a sensible middle option. Higher sun generally means brighter light underwater, but I can't promise conditions on any given day.

15:00 works if you want a slow morning, or if you are coming back from a longer outing. It leaves your evening open.

The honest bits

  • You are looking through glass. What you see depends on the day and the reef. Expect a good view of coral and shoals, not an encounter with large animals.
  • The cabin is cool. Helios suggests a light jacket, which sounds odd in Hurghada but makes sense after 45 minutes of air-conditioning.
  • The upper deck is sunny. Bring sunscreen and a camera.
  • It is shared. With up to 15 guests, expect other people at the windows. This is not a private charter.
  • Extras cost extra. Personal expenses and the optional photo session are not included.

What is included

The trip includes air-conditioned hotel transfers, the glass-bottom boat ticket, the guided snorkel stop, life jackets, drinking water, and taxes and insurance. That is the whole list, so bring anything else you want, such as snacks or a towel for the snorkel stop.

Building the rest of the day

The boat takes up only a couple of hours, which leaves room for easy independent plans without a second tour:

  • After a 09:00 trip: have a late breakfast or early lunch near the marina, then spend the afternoon by your hotel pool or on the beach.
  • After an 11:00 trip: eat lunch, rest through the hottest hours, and take an evening walk by the waterfront.
  • Before a 15:00 trip: sleep in, take a morning swim at your hotel, and keep lunch light.

If you have more than one day, don't cram a long excursion around this one. Our guide to the Cairo or Luxor day trip from Hurghada explains why those are long days that need their own slot. If you are still choosing dates, Egypt in October covers the warm sea and temperatures.

Who should skip it

If you already snorkel confidently and want to spend hours in the water, this will feel short. The guided stop is 30–40 minutes, and the glass-bottom cabin is the main event. If that is you, book it only as a family-friendly extra, or skip it.
