Dolphin House Snorkeling Trip from Hurghada: How the Day Runs
An 8-hour small-group boat day to Sha'ab El Erg, with honest notes on the early start, the sailing time and what to do afterwards.

If you want to snorkel over coral and have a real chance of seeing wild dolphins, the Dolphin House Snorkeling Trip in Hurghada is a good use of one day. It is a day trip by boat, not a sight in town. It lasts about 8 hours, starts with a 07:30 hotel pickup and runs as a shared small group of up to 8 guests. Expect a early start, roughly three hours of sailing in total, and no guarantee of dolphins.
What Dolphin House actually is
Dolphin House is the popular name for Sha'ab El Erg, a horseshoe-shaped reef north of Hurghada. A resident pod of spinner dolphins rests in the sheltered open water around it. This is wild behaviour, not a show. Sometimes the pod is close, and sometimes it is elsewhere. Helios says plainly that sightings cannot be guaranteed and that swimming near the dolphins depends on conditions.
The day in order
07:30 to 09:15: hotel, marina, open water
You are collected from your Hurghada hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. The ride to Hurghada Marina takes about 15 minutes. Then comes the longest stretch of the day, about 1 hour 30 minutes by boat to Sha'ab El Erg. Eat something before you leave, and consider seasickness tablets if you are prone to it, because the open Red Sea can be choppy.
Mid-morning: the dolphin stop
You get about an hour here, and it is the reason for the trip. Boats from several operators often gather at Dolphin House, so do not expect to be alone. The licensed snorkel guide is on board with life jackets and a first-aid kit. Keep calm in the water and let the dolphins decide how close to come.
Late morning to early afternoon: reef, lunch, banana boat
Next is the first coral reef snorkel stop, also about an hour, over living coral and reef fish. Lunch on board follows for about an hour, with soft drinks, coffee and tea. After lunch there is a 30-minute banana-boat or sofa ride, which is lively and good for families. The second stop is a reef and lagoon snorkel of about an hour.
Afternoon: the return
The boat takes around 1 hour 15 minutes back to the marina, followed by the 15-minute transfer to your hotel. If you leave at 07:30, expect to be back in the middle of the afternoon, tired and salty.
Is it right for you?
The trip suits beginners and confident snorkelers alike, and it is family-friendly. Life jackets are provided and recommended for beginners. It is less suitable if you dislike long boat rides, have little patience for uncertain wildlife encounters, or want a slow morning. Gratuities and personal expenses are not included.
- Bring: a towel, swimwear and sunscreen. A waterproof camera is optional.
- Sun: the glare on deck is strong, so reapply sunscreen after each swim.
- Water temperature: the Red Sea is cooler in winter, so you may feel the chill after an hour in the water.
What to do independently afterwards
Do not plan anything demanding for the rest of the day. After a shower, the marina area is an easy evening walk with cafés and restaurants. Hurghada's older district, Dahar, is livelier, with its market streets and local eateries. If you have another free day, Cairo or Luxor as a day trip from Hurghada is a much longer and more tiring option, so give yourself a rest day between the two. If you are planning around the season, our guide to Egypt in October covers sea and weather conditions.
Pickup beyond Hurghada
Pickup from El Quseir or Marsa Alam is possible on request. Ask before booking, since that is a much longer journey to the marina and Helios's supplied details do not say how it changes the day.
