Germany 7 Day Itinerary: Berlin, Bamberg and Munich, Realistically
One route that fits a week without turning it into a train timetable, and what to save for another trip.
The short answer: in seven days, do Berlin, Bamberg and Munich, in that order, and nothing else. That is three nights in Berlin, one in Bamberg and two in Munich. Germany is big, and every extra city costs you half a day on a train. Trying to add Hamburg, Cologne, the Rhine and the Black Forest turns the week into a series of station platforms.
Who this route is for
It suits first-time visitors who want one big capital, one small medieval town and one Bavarian city, and who are happy travelling by train. It is a poor fit if you want to hike, drive the countryside or see a lot of the west. If you land in Frankfurt, expect to add a transfer day.
The route, day by day
Days 1 to 3: Berlin
Berlin is spread out, so give it three days. Day 1 is arrival and a walk. Day 2 is the central sights: the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and the remains of the Wall. Our guide to visiting the Reichstag dome covers the registration you need, and Berlin in 3 days has the full plan.
Day 3 is for something heavier. The Sachsenhausen Memorial guided visit leaves Friedrichstraße station at 10:00 and takes about six hours, with roughly three hours on foot at the memorial. It runs as a small-group shared tour of up to 15 guests, and commentary is in English or German. Your public transport ticket is not included. This is not a light day, so plan a quiet evening. For context, read visiting Sachsenhausen and Dachau.
Day 4: Berlin to Bamberg
This is your main travel day. Take a fast train south from Berlin; it is a journey of several hours, so leave in the morning and check the timetable on the Deutsche Bahn site. You arrive in Bamberg in the afternoon, which is enough time for the evening Bamberg beer history walk. It is a small-group shared walk of up to 15 guests, in English or German, ending at a brewpub. The tasting of four small beers is optional and paid on the spot. The tour is for adults aged 18 and over.
Day 5: Bamberg to Munich
Spend the morning on the Bamberg old town walk. It takes two hours, in a shared small group of up to 15, from the Tourist Information to the Domberg, the Old Town Hall in the river and Little Venice. The cathedral is seen from outside only; the tour does not go inside it. Check the trip page for times. After lunch, take the train to Munich. More on the town is in our Bamberg guide.
Days 6 and 7: Munich
Use Munich in 2 days as the base plan. You can swap one day for Neuschwanstein Castle, but be honest with yourself: it is a long day with a lot of waiting and walking, and you would be giving up Munich itself.
What to leave for another trip
- Hamburg and the north: too far for this week.
- The Rhine and the Black Forest: better with a car or a dedicated western trip.
- Dresden, Cologne and Heidelberg: each is good, but each costs you a day.
- Rothenburg and the Romantic Road: lovely, but better when Bavaria is your whole trip.
A slower alternative
Use two bases instead of three: four nights in Berlin, three in Munich. You get one long train ride, easier mornings and room for a Berlin day trip, such as Sachsenhausen, and a Bavarian one. The tradeoff is clear: you lose Bamberg and its old town, and Munich becomes your only taste of Bavaria. If you value pace over variety, this is the better week.
Timing and transport
Trains are the sensible way to link these cities, and the legs are long enough that you should treat them as half-days. Book seats on the longer legs, and allow for delays. Our first-time Germany tips cover money and train etiquette, and the best time to visit Germany helps you choose a season.
What to check on official sites
- Train times and fares on the Deutsche Bahn site.
- Reichstag dome registration and opening days.
- Opening days of the Sachsenhausen memorial and any Neuschwanstein ticket rules.
- Helios tour dates and times on each trip page.
Germany 7 day itinerary FAQ
Is seven days enough for Germany?
It is enough for three stops, not for the whole country. Berlin, Bamberg and Munich fit, with two travel half-days.
Should I fly or take the train between cities?
The train works well on this route, since it runs station to station. Check journey times on the Deutsche Bahn site before booking.
Are the Helios tours private?
No. Sachsenhausen and both Bamberg walks are small-group shared tours for up to 15 guests.
Can I skip Bamberg?
Yes. Add a night each to Berlin and Munich, or use the slower alternative above. You will miss a quieter medieval old town, but you will have more breathing room.
