The Best Time to Visit Germany, Season by Season
Weather, crowds and highlights month by month, from spring asparagus to Christmas markets
The best time to visit Germany for most travellers is from May to September, when days are long, beer gardens and river cruises are open and the weather is reliably mild. September and early October are the sweet spot: still warm, past the school-holiday peak, and the start of the wine harvest. December is a second high season thanks to the Christmas markets, while January to March is cold, quiet and cheapest.
Germany's climate in brief
Germany has a temperate climate with four clear seasons. Summers are warm rather than hot, with average daytime highs in the low to mid twenties Celsius in most cities and occasional heatwaves above 30 degrees. Winters are cold and grey, typically between about minus 2 and plus 5 degrees, with snow more likely in the south and in the mountains than in Berlin or along the Rhine. Rain falls in every month, so a light waterproof layer belongs in your bag whatever the season.
The south (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) tends to have warmer summers and colder, snowier winters than the north. The north coast is cooler and windier. Daylight changes a lot: around 16 hours in late June, and only about 8 in December.
Germany month by month
| Months | Weather | Crowds | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–February | Cold, often grey | Low | Museums, ski areas in the Alps, Carnival in Cologne and the Rhineland |
| March–April | Cool, changeable | Low to medium | Easter markets, first blossoms, beer gardens reopen on sunny days |
| May–June | Mild to warm | Medium | Asparagus season, wine festivals, long evenings |
| July–August | Warmest | High | Lake swimming, open-air events, river cruises |
| September–October | Mild, golden | Medium to high | Oktoberfest, grape harvest, autumn colours |
| November | Cold, dark | Low | Quietest month until the Christmas markets open late in the month |
| December | Cold | High in cities | Christmas markets until about 23 December |
Spring (March to May)
Spring arrives gradually. March can still feel like winter, but by late April the Rhine and Main valleys are green, blossom is out and outdoor cafés reopen. Easter brings decorated fountains in Franconia and Easter markets in many towns. May is one of the best months of the year: comfortable temperatures, fewer visitors than in summer, and the start of white asparagus season (Spargelzeit), when restaurants across the country add special asparagus menus until about late June.
Keep in mind that several public holidays fall in spring, including Easter, 1 May, Ascension Day and Whit Monday. Around them, trains and popular spots get busier and some shops close.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is peak season, and for good reason. Evenings stay light until after 9 pm, beer gardens are full, people swim in lakes and rivers, and cities stage open-air concerts and festivals. It is also the best time for river trips. In Berlin, a one-hour Spree river cruise through the historic centre is a relaxed way to see the Museum Island and the government quarter from the water.
The trade-offs are crowds and prices. German school holidays are staggered by state, but most fall between late June and mid-September, and that is when hotels in the Alps, on the coasts and in places like Neuschwanstein are most in demand. Book well ahead and visit the busiest sights early in the morning.
Summer evenings are also when wine regions are at their most sociable. In Würzburg, a summer evening walk with sparkling wine and wine ends in the long golden light over the Main, which is the best hour of the day in the city.
Autumn (September to November)
If you can choose freely, choose September. The weather is usually still warm, most school holidays have ended, and the wine regions along the Rhine, Moselle and Main begin their harvest, with Federweißer and onion tart on every menu. Forests in the Black Forest, the Harz and Bavaria turn colour in October.
Munich's Oktoberfest, despite the name, starts in the second half of September and runs into the first days of October. Hotel prices in Munich rise sharply during it, so plan accordingly whether you want to attend or avoid it. After mid-October the days shorten quickly, and November is the greyest, quietest month of the year, a good time for museums and city breaks at lower prices.
Winter (December to February)
December is its own season. From late November, Christmas markets fill old-town squares across the country, and cities like Nuremberg, Dresden and Cologne get very busy at weekends. Smaller cities offer the same atmosphere with more space. In Würzburg, the winter tour with the Residenz, the old town and mulled wine combines the warm palace interiors with the lights of the market.
January and February are the low season. It is cold and often grey, but museums, palaces, concert halls and thermal baths are all open, prices are lower and you will share the sights with locals rather than tour groups. In the Alps, this is ski season. Carnival (Karneval, Fasching) peaks in February or early March, especially in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz.
The best time for different trips
- City breaks (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg): April to June and September to October.
- Romantic Road and castles: May to early October; some castle interiors have shorter winter hours.
- Wine regions: May to October, with the harvest in September and October.
- Christmas markets: late November to 23 December.
- Hiking in the Alps: late June to September, when high trails are free of snow.
- Lowest prices: January to March and November, outside trade fairs.
Dates to watch
Large trade fairs in cities like Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne and Düsseldorf can double hotel prices for a week, even in otherwise quiet months. Check the trade fair calendar of the city you plan to visit before you book. Also note that most shops are closed on Sundays and public holidays, while museums and restaurants usually stay open.
FAQ
What is the cheapest time to visit Germany?
January to March and November are usually cheapest for flights and hotels, except during big trade fairs and Carnival in the Rhineland.
When is Oktoberfest?
It begins in the second half of September and ends in the first days of October. Check the official dates for the year you travel, as they shift slightly.
Is Germany worth visiting in winter?
Yes, especially in December for the Christmas markets. January and February are cold but quiet, and indoor sights such as palaces and museums are at their least crowded.
Does it snow in German cities?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Snow is more common in the south and the mountains; Berlin, Frankfurt and the Rhineland often have grey, wet winters without much snow.
Which month has the best weather in Germany?
June and early September usually offer the best balance: warm, long days without the peak-season crowds of July and August. May is a close second, although it can be changeable and a cool, rainy week is always possible.
