Private or Shared Guided Day in France: How to Choose
Group size, pace, meeting points and the questions to put to any supplier, using three Nice tours as worked examples.
Here is the plain answer for Nice, where Helios runs its France tours in this article: all three trips below are shared small-group tours. Their booking formats list no private option. If a private guide is a must for you, these are not the trips, and it is better to know that now than at checkout.
If you are happy to share, the real choice is how big the group is and how much of the day is fixed. A 2-hour walk of up to 15 people, a 3-hour tasting walk of up to 12 and an 8-hour minivan day of up to 8 are very different experiences.
Who this is for
This is for travellers comparing guided days on the Riviera and wondering whether to pay for exclusivity or accept a group. Shared works well when the route is fixed and the guide's job is to explain it. Private matters more when you have mobility needs, a very specific interest, or want to change the day as you go.
What shared really means
- Fixed pace. The itinerary and timings are set. If you love the Èze garden, you will not get an extra hour at the expense of Monaco.
- Fixed start. Each trip has one listed start time. You fit the tour, not the other way round.
- Shared attention. In narrow lanes a group of 12 or 15 will sometimes bunch up around the guide. Stand near the front if you want to hear every story.
The upside is a guide, a plan and a small group without organising any of it yourself.
Three Nice examples, from short to long
Two hours on foot: the orientation walk
The Old Nice, Promenade des Anglais and Castle Hill walking tour starts at 10:00 by the sea, crosses Place Masséna, passes the Cours Saleya and Sainte-Réparate on Place Rossetti, and ends on Castle Hill. It is shared, with up to 15 guests. You can climb the stairs or take the free lift up. It is a good first morning, but it is an introduction, not a deep dive, and food and museum entries are not included.
Three hours of eating: the smaller group
The Old Nice and Cours Saleya food tasting walk starts at 10:30 at Place Masséna and is capped at 12 guests. Tastings include socca, pissaladière, pan bagnat and chard pie, enough for a full meal, so do not book lunch afterwards. Hotel pickup is not included, and extra food, drinks and tips are yours to cover.
Eight hours by road: the one where group size matters most
The Èze and Monaco day trip from Nice leaves at 09:00 and returns to the same meeting point. The guide also drives an air-conditioned minivan for up to 8 guests, east along the corniche: a viewpoint over Villefranche and Cap Ferrat, about 1 h 30 min in Èze, about 2 h 30 min in Monaco-Ville, then Monte-Carlo and the drive back. It is a long day with a lot of sitting between stops. Entry to the Èze garden, the Prince's Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and the casino is not included, nor are lunch and drinks.
Practical timing and transport
Check where the tour starts, because it differs. The food walk meets at Place Masséna, the walking tour by the sea on the Promenade des Anglais, and the day trip at a Nice meeting point. Do not assume hotel pickup: the two walks state it is not included, so plan to be at the start on foot or by tram or taxi. For the day trip, confirm the exact meeting point in your booking confirmation.
Season changes how the days feel, so read our guide to Nice in October and November before you pick a date.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Is this booking format private or shared, and what is the maximum group size?
- What exactly is the meeting point, and what happens if I am late?
- Which entry tickets, meals and drinks are included, and which are not?
- In which language is the guide's commentary?
- How much of the timing is fixed, and what happens in bad weather?
- What is the cancellation policy?
A good supplier answers these in a sentence each. Vague answers are a signal in themselves.
What to verify before you book
Confirm the current booking format, start time, language and inclusions on the trip page itself. Opening hours and entry rules for places such as Èze garden, the Prince's Palace or Castle Hill are set by those sites, so check their official pages for your date. This article deliberately gives no prices, because they can change.
