Èze and Monaco Day Trip from Nice: How the Day Really Works
An eight-hour small-group day along the corniche, with the stops in order, the effort involved and what you can do on your own.

The short answer
If you want to see two famous Riviera places in one day without handling trains, buses and hills yourself, this trip suits you. Helios's Èze and Monaco day trip from Nice is an 8-hour road trip that starts at 09:00 in Nice and returns you to the same meeting point. It runs as a shared small-group tour of up to 8 guests, not a private one.
It is a sampler, not a deep visit. You get about an hour and a half in Èze, about two and a half hours in Monaco-Ville and about an hour and a quarter in Monte-Carlo. If you want to linger in one place, this format will feel rushed. If you want a good overview and the logistics handled, it works well.
The day in order
Nice to the corniche (09:00)
You meet your Helios guide at the meeting point in Nice. The guide also drives the air-conditioned minivan, and commentary is in English or German. The pickup takes about 15 minutes, then you head east along the coast on the corniche roads.
The first stop is a viewpoint of about 20 minutes above the bay of Villefranche and Cap Ferrat. It is a photo stop, and a good one. The road is winding, so anyone prone to car sickness should sit near the front and take care.
Èze village (about 1 h 30 min)
Èze is a medieval village perched on a rock high above the sea. It is a walk, not a stroll. The lanes are stone, narrow and steep, with plenty of steps, so wear shoes with grip, not smooth-soled sandals. Midsummer can be hot and busy, and the lanes offer little shade.
At the top is an exotic garden, and there are perfume workshops in the village. The itinerary gives free time for either, but entry to the garden is not included. With 90 minutes, you can walk up, see the garden and come back down at an easy pace, but not much more. Perfume is a good use of the time if you prefer something indoors.
Monaco-Ville, the Rock (about 2 h 30 min)
Monaco is a separate principality, and the old town sits on a rocky headland. You see the Prince's Palace from the outside, visit the cathedral where Princess Grace is buried and wander the old streets. Entry to the palace is not included, nor is the Oceanographic Museum.
This is the longest stop and the one with time for lunch. Lunch and drinks are not included, and a meal on the Rock is not the cheapest of the trip. Eat there if you want the setting, or bring a snack and save your money for something else.
Monte-Carlo (about 1 h 15 min)
You then cross to Monte-Carlo for the casino square and drive parts of the Grand Prix circuit. Be realistic: the circuit is ordinary city streets, so you see it from the minivan. The casino square is mostly about looking at the building and the cars outside. Casino entry is not included.
Back to Nice (about 45 min)
The return drive follows the coast to the meeting point. The itinerary stops add up to well under eight hours, and the rest is time on the road, so expect the day to feel full.
What you can explore on your own
The coast is well connected by regional train, so independent travellers can reach Monaco from Nice without a car. Èze is harder: the village sits far above the shore, and getting up to it takes extra effort. That is a real reason to book the tour. Equally, if you only want Monaco, a day there by train gives you more time at your own pace.
On the tour, use free time deliberately. In Èze, choose between the garden and a perfume workshop rather than trying both. In Monaco, pick the cathedral and old lanes first, then lunch. Keep a little cash or a card for entry fees and tips, neither of which is included.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who cannot manage steep steps and uneven stone.
- Visitors who want to go inside the palace, the casino or the museum, since those entries are extra and the time is short.
- Travellers who want a private tour. This one is shared.
If you are still deciding when to visit, see Nice in October and November for what the weather is like outside high summer.
