One Day in El Nido: Big Lagoon by Kayak and a Paced Island Day
How to spend a single day on Bacuit Bay, what is walkable, what is boat-only, and what to check before you pay.
Short answer: is one day enough for Big Lagoon?
Yes. One day is enough to see Big Lagoon properly, and it is the right amount if El Nido is a stop rather than your whole trip. The simplest way is a boat day on Bacuit Bay. Helios runs the El Nido boat tour covering Big Lagoon, islands and Cadlao Lagoon. It takes about six hours, starts and ends in El Nido, and visits five places, with kayaks at two lagoons and a Filipino buffet lunch.
One thing to get straight: the tour's name says "private", but its booking format is a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests. Expect company, and confirm the format when you book.
It suits couples, friends and families who are happy in the water and can take a day of strong sun. If you want to compare other routes, read El Nido island hopping: Tours A, B, C and D compared.
Before the boat: what is walkable
Big Lagoon is not walkable. It sits across the bay and is reached only by water. What you can walk is El Nido town itself: a compact, busy strip of guesthouses, cafés and tour desks along the beach, with limestone cliffs rising behind.
Use the evening before to stroll the seafront, collect enough cash, and confirm where you meet the crew. Hotel pickup and drop-off are not included, so ask how to reach the departure point rather than assuming a van will appear.
On the water: the day in order
Big Lagoon, about one hour
Your crew brings the kayak and you paddle between tall limestone cliffs into the lagoon. It is one of the best-known sights in the Philippines, so you will share it with other boats and paddlers. Go for the scale of the cliffs and the green water, not for solitude.
Entalula Island, about one hour
A quiet white beach for swimming and resting. This is the slow part of the day, and a good moment to reapply sunscreen.
Snake Island, about 1.5 hours
You walk the curving sandbar and swim in the shallows. How much sand shows depends on the tide, and the bar is a photo magnet, so expect other groups.
Helicopter Island, about 45 minutes
Swimming and snorkelling in clear water below the island's rocks. Water shoes and a snorkel mask are not included, so bring your own.
Cadlao Lagoon, about one hour
A calmer lagoon on Cadlao Island, explored by kayak before the ride back to El Nido. Lunch is a Filipino buffet prepared fresh on the day and served on board.
The unglamorous parts
- Sun: shade is limited on the water and on the sandbar. Bring a hat, a long-sleeved top and sunscreen.
- Cash: the El Nido eco-tourism fee and the Big Lagoon ticket are not included. Both are paid locally in cash, and the eco-tourism fee is paid before boarding.
- Not included: alcoholic drinks, water shoes, a snorkel mask and hotel transfers. Bottled water, a juice or soft drink, towels and life jackets are on board.
- Weather: boat days depend on sea conditions. Around typhoon season, read Philippines in October and November: will island tours still run?
- Timing: six hours is not a full day. Confirm the departure time when you book, then plan the rest of your day around it.
Getting to El Nido and fitting it in
El Nido is in the north of Palawan and takes effort to reach, by air or by a long road journey. Our guide to getting around the Philippines covers flights, ferries and vans. Arrive the day before rather than on the morning of your tour, so a delayed transfer does not cost you the boat.
With more time, El Nido vs Coron helps you decide between Palawan bases. Two weeks in the Philippines shows where El Nido fits in a longer trip, and the Philippines packing list covers what to bring.
What to verify before you go
Access and fee rules around Big Lagoon can change. I have not confirmed current amounts or conditions here, so check these with the El Nido municipal tourism office or its official channels, and with Helios when you book:
- The current eco-tourism fee and the Big Lagoon ticket, and how each is paid.
- Any limits or rules on kayaking and visitor numbers at the lagoons.
- Weather or sea advisories on the day.
