El Dahar, Hurghada: A Visitor Guide to the Old Town

El Dahar is a working neighbourhood rather than a ticketed sight, so here is how long to give it, when to go and what to check first.

El Dahar, Hurghada: A Visitor Guide to the Old Town

The short answer: no ticket, about two hours, go in the morning

El Dahar is the old town of Hurghada, an everyday neighbourhood of shops, cafés and market lanes. It has no entrance gate, so there is nothing to book to walk around it. Allow about an hour for the lanes and souk, or around two if you want to sit down for tea and shop properly. Go in the morning, before the heat builds.

The things that do need planning sit around it: the mosque, the aquarium and the museum. Check those before you go (see below). Locals use both El Dahar and Sakala for the old town, so expect to hear either name.

Who this is for

This guide suits travellers staying along the resort strip who want to see the city itself. It is not for anyone looking for a polished heritage district. El Dahar is busy, a little dusty and loud with traffic. It is real, and that is its appeal.

What you actually see

You walk shopping lanes lined with spices, textiles, souvenirs and household goods, with cafés where men sit over tea. Expect to be invited into shops. A polite no and a smile are enough, but the attention is constant and can wear on you after half an hour.

Bargaining is normal here. Bring cash in small notes, because many stalls will not take cards.

The waterfront El Mina Mosque, with its twin minarets, is the landmark most visitors photograph. The Marina Boulevard is a different Hurghada, with promenade cafés and yachts. It is more relaxed and more tourist-oriented, so do not expect it to feel like the old town.

Timing and transport

Aim to be in the lanes by mid-morning at the latest. From late spring through summer, the souk can be punishingly hot by midday, since the lanes offer patchy shade. Bring sunglasses and a hat, and drink water often. Cooler months are far easier. Our Egypt in October guide gives a sense of how pleasant walking becomes once the heat eases.

Shop rhythms shift around prayer times, and Friday is the weekly day of prayer, so some places open later. Check your day rather than assuming everything is open.

Most resorts are a drive from the old town, so you will need a taxi or an arranged transfer. Agree the fare before you get in, and arrange the return before you wander off, since catching a ride back from the lanes can take patience.

How the Helios city tour covers it

If you would rather not navigate alone, the Hurghada City Tour: Marina, Old Town, Mosque and Museum runs by road and takes 4 hours. It is offered as a private tour for just your party, whatever its size. It starts at 10:00 with a hotel pickup, and the stops run in this order:

  • El Mina Mosque, 45 minutes
  • El Dahar old town and local souk, 1 hour
  • Marina Boulevard promenade, 45 minutes
  • Hurghada Grand Aquarium or the Hurghada Museum, 1 hour

You choose the aquarium or the museum when you book. Hotel transfers, entrance to your chosen attraction, Egyptian tea, taxes and insurance are included. Personal expenses and shopping purchases are not, so bring cash for the souk.

The honest drawback is that a 10:00 start puts you in the old town around late morning, which is warm in summer. The tour does give you a guide to cut through the sales pressure, and one hour in the souk is enough for most people.

What to check before you go

We have not listed opening hours or entry arrangements here, because they change. Check the official channels for each place before you plan around it:

  • Whether El Mina Mosque is open to visitors on your day, and at what times.
  • The aquarium's and the museum's current opening days and entry arrangements. Do not assume both are open at the same time.
  • Any local closures, such as a religious holiday.

For the mosque, cover your shoulders and knees. If you are weighing a bigger excursion instead, see Cairo or Luxor day trip from Hurghada.

El Dahar FAQ

Do I need to book ahead to visit El Dahar?

No, not to walk the lanes and souk. Booking matters for the Helios tour, mainly so you can choose the aquarium or the museum, and for anything you want to visit nearby that has its own entry rules.

How long should I allow?

About one to two hours for El Dahar itself. A full city loop with the mosque, Marina and an attraction takes around four hours, as on the Helios tour.

Is the Helios city tour private or shared?

It is offered as private, for your own party only, according to its booking formats.

What should I wear and bring?

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for the mosque, plus sunglasses, a hat and cash for the souk.
