Egypt with Children: Choosing a Comfortable Pace by City
How to match a Hurghada or Cairo day to your children's ages, and when to skip the long one.

The short answer: for families with young children, a Cairo day trip from Hurghada is usually the wrong first choice. It is a 17 to 18 hour day with about nine to ten hours of it spent driving across the desert. Teenagers and older children who cope with long car journeys can enjoy it, especially if you choose fewer sights. For everyone else, start with an easy city day in Hurghada and keep Cairo as the one big day of the week, or leave it for a trip where you stay in the capital.
This guide is for parents building an Egypt family itinerary across several cities and trying to avoid a trip that is mostly seatbelts and tired children.
The honest cost of Cairo in a day
Both of our Cairo day trips leave Hurghada in the dark. The private Cairo day trip collects you around 03:00, reaches Cairo at about 08:00 and returns you to the hotel around 20:00. Cairo à la Carte starts at 03:30 and runs 18 hours, with roughly 4h 30m each way. Both include a comfort stop on the road.
Sleep in the vehicle is possible, but it is not guaranteed, and the return leg comes after a full day on your feet. A child who melts down at 16:00 will still have a long drive ahead. Take this into account before booking, not on the day.
Both trips are private, so the pace belongs to your party. There is no shared bus to keep up with. The private Cairo day trip states that children must be accompanied by an adult. It does not mention child seats, so ask before booking if you need them.
Pace by age
- Toddlers and pre-schoolers: skip the Cairo day. A 4 hour city outing with long breaks is a better use of their patience.
- Primary-school children: a Cairo day is possible only if you trim it hard. Choose two outdoor sights, not four, and accept that the drive stays the same length.
- Teenagers: the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum tend to land well here, and the early start is mostly a grumble.
You know your children's limits better than any itinerary does. Use these as starting points, not rules.
Alternatives to long museum visits
The private Cairo day trip is built around a fixed two-hour slot at the Grand Egyptian Museum, followed by two hours on the Giza plateau. That suits museum-loving older children. Younger ones usually do better outside.
Cairo à la Carte lets you choose up to four sights from a menu, so you can swap indoor time for open space:
- Saqqara and the Step Pyramid, or the Red Pyramid, for wide, open ground to walk around.
- Memphis, a small open-air site that is easy to finish.
- A short Nile river cruise, which gives children a seat and a breeze.
- The Cairo Tower, for a view of the city.
You can send your selection when booking or decide with your guide on the day. Entrance fees are paid separately for the sights you choose. Giza has little shade at midday, so bring sunscreen, hats and comfortable shoes, as the trip details advise.
The easy day: Hurghada itself
Most families never leave the resort strip. The Hurghada city tour is a private 4 hour outing starting at 10:00, with no dawn pickup. It visits El Mina Mosque, the El Dahar old town souk, the Marina Boulevard, and then the Grand Aquarium or the Hurghada Museum. You choose which of the last two when you book, and for most children the aquarium is the easier pick.
Each stop is 45 minutes to an hour, with tea included. Shoulders and knees must be covered for the mosque, and cash is useful in the souk.
Practical timing and transport
- Space the big days out. Put one long excursion between easy days, never two in a row.
- Prepare for 03:00. Order a breakfast box from reception the day before, as advised for the private Cairo day trip, and bring a light jacket for the early pickup.
- Plan the drive. Both Cairo trips use a vehicle with comfort stops. Pack snacks, downloaded films and something to sleep on.
- Pick one anchor per city. On a longer route, let each city have one main sight and one slow half day. If you also want Luxor, our comparison of the Cairo and Luxor day trips shows what each long day involves.
- Check the season. The Egypt in October guide covers how the weather affects outdoor days.
What to check before you go
Opening hours, ticket rules for children and entry arrangements at the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Giza plateau change. Look at each site's official channels shortly before travelling. Confirm your pickup location too: guests from outside Hurghada may pay a transfer supplement. Check which languages the guide offers, as the trips list English, and German on one of them.
FAQ
Is a Cairo day trip from Hurghada suitable for young children?
It is a long day, with about nine to ten hours in a vehicle and a pickup around 03:00 or 03:30. Many families with young children will find the Hurghada city tour easier. Decide based on how your children cope with long drives.
Can we shorten the Cairo day?
You can reduce the number of sights, which Cairo à la Carte is designed for, but the drive between Hurghada and Cairo stays about the same.
Are the Cairo trips private?
Yes. Both are booked as private trips for just your party, as is the Hurghada city tour.
What can we do instead of a big museum?
On Cairo à la Carte you can choose open-air sights such as Saqqara, Memphis or a short Nile cruise instead of a long indoor visit.
What should we bring?
Passport or ID, comfortable shoes, sunscreen and a hat. For the mosque in Hurghada, bring clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
