Chianti Day Trip from Florence: A Winery and Tasting, Hour by Hour
What the eight-hour small-group Chianti day looks like, from the 09:00 start to the drive back, and where it asks you to sort out lunch yourself.
If you want to see Chianti's vineyards and taste Chianti Classico without hiring a car or worrying about who drives, a day trip works well. Florence's busy sightseeing season is a good time to leave the city for a day. The Helios Chianti day trip from Florence with winery visit and tasting runs for 8 hours, starts at 09:00 and travels by road in an air-conditioned minivan.
It is a shared small-group tour for up to 8 guests, not a private one. It is not a leisurely all-day lunch at a grand estate. The tasting comes with olive oil, bread and cheese, but lunch is not included. Hotel pickup is not included either, so you meet in central Florence.
How the day runs
Leaving Florence on the old Chiantigiana
You meet your Helios guide, who is also the driver, in the centre. The first hour is the drive south on the old Chiantigiana road, climbing out of the city into hills of cypresses, olive groves and stone farmhouses. The road is scenic but winding, so anyone prone to motion sickness should sit near the front and say so early.
Greve in Chianti
The first stop is Greve, about an hour and a half on foot. Its market square is funnel-shaped and arcaded, and the village has food shops worth browsing. This is a good time for a coffee or to pick up something to take home. Keep in mind that you will taste wine later, so do not fill up on a big meal here.
The winery visit
Next is a family-run winery, where you walk through the vines and the cellar with the winemaker's team for about an hour. You learn how Chianti Classico is made and what the black rooster on the label means. The cellar is cool even on a hot day, so a light layer is useful. The estate itself varies, so do not expect a particular name from the brief.
The tasting
You then taste several of the estate's wines for roughly another hour, with local olive oil, bread and cheese. The portions are a tasting, not a meal. Pace yourself, drink water between pours and ask for a spittoon if you want to. You are not driving, which is the point of going with a guide.
Free time in a hilltop village
The last stop is Panzano or Castellina, with about an hour and a half of free time. The village is not fixed in advance. This is where you eat lunch, at your own cost, and where you get views over the valley. Walk the main street first, then choose somewhere to eat. In high season, popular tables fill up, so decide quickly.
Back to Florence
The return drive is about an hour through the hills to the centre, and you are back in the late afternoon.
What is and is not included
- Included: minivan transport from and back to central Florence, a Helios guide and driver for the whole day, the winery visit with vineyard and cellar tour, the tasting with olive oil, bread and cheese, and commentary in English, German or your language on request.
- Not included: hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch, extra wine or bottles you buy, and tips.
What to explore on your own
The tour gives you free time in Greve and the hilltop village, so that is your independent exploring. You can wander the arcades, look in shops, find a viewpoint or sit over lunch. Do not expect to add stops or leave the group early.
If you want more time at one spot, a day trip is the wrong format. Chianti's wineries are spread across hills and are not within walking distance of each other. Buses serve towns like Greve, but they are slower and less frequent than a minivan, and they do not reach most estates.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you want a private tour, a long multi-course lunch or the freedom to choose which winery you visit. You also may not enjoy it if you dislike small vehicles and winding roads. If you are happy with a structured day and a shared minivan, it is an easy way to see the countryside around Florence.
