Big Lagoon from El Nido: Timing, Tickets and What You'll See

A plain-spoken guide to deciding when to go, whether to book ahead and what the lagoon is actually like.

Big Lagoon from El Nido: Timing, Tickets and What You'll See

Short answer: go, but plan around the boats

Big Lagoon is worth seeing. It is a sheltered pool of green-blue water ringed by tall limestone cliffs on Miniloc Island, in Bacuit Bay, and it is one of the places that make El Nido's reputation. You cannot reach it by road, so it means a boat trip. Book the boat ahead in busy months, allow about an hour at the lagoon itself and expect to share the water with other kayakers.

It is not a secret. The best-known lagoon in the bay is also one of the busiest, and the experience depends heavily on when your boat arrives.

Who this is for

This guide suits first-timers staying in El Nido town who want one good day on the water, not a week of island hopping. It also suits anyone comparing the standard A, B, C and D routes. If that is you, read El Nido Island Hopping: Tours A, B, C and D Compared next.

What you actually see

You approach by boat across Bacuit Bay, with karst cliffs rising straight from the sea. The lagoon entrance is a gap in the rock, and you paddle in by kayak. Inside, the walls close in and the water turns calm and green. The pleasure is the scale: sheer cliffs above, a quiet pool below, and the sound of paddles.

Do not expect an empty lagoon or a wildlife encounter. What you get is scenery, and a morning with fewer boats feels very different from one with many.

The Helios day, in order

Helios runs El Nido Private Boat Tour: Big Lagoon, Islands and Cadlao Lagoon, a six-hour day from El Nido. One point of clarity: despite the word "private" in the trip name, its booking format is a shared small-group tour of up to 15 guests. Treat it as a small group, not a boat to yourselves.

  • Big Lagoon, about 1 hour: paddle the kayak your crew brings between the cliffs.
  • Entalula Island, about 1 hour: a quiet white beach for swimming and resting.
  • Snake Island, about 1.5 hours: walk the curving sandbar and swim in the shallows.
  • Helicopter Island, about 45 minutes: swim and snorkel in clear water below the rocks.
  • Cadlao Lagoon, about 1 hour: a calm lagoon on Cadlao Island, explored by kayak before the ride back.

Lunch is a Filipino buffet. Included are bottled water, a juice or soft drink, life jackets, towels, kayaks at both lagoons and a licensed English-speaking local guide. Water shoes, a snorkel mask, alcoholic drinks and hotel transfers are not included, so sort those out yourself.

Timing and how long to allow

Allow about an hour at Big Lagoon, and plan on a full day if you want to see more than the lagoon. This itinerary takes six hours in total. Ask at booking what time the boat leaves and how that affects when you reach the lagoon. Earlier arrivals usually meet fewer boats, but confirm the actual schedule instead of assuming it.

Weather decides everything. Boat trips can be changed or cancelled when seas are rough, and that is more likely in typhoon season. Our guides to the best time to visit the Philippines and to island tours in October and November explain the risk, so keep a spare day in your schedule.

Tickets and fees: what is not in the tour price

The El Nido eco-tourism fee and the Big Lagoon entry ticket are not included in the Helios tour. Both are paid locally in cash, so carry cash on the day. Amounts and rules change, so confirm current figures on El Nido's official tourism channels instead of trusting a blog, including ours.

What to check before you go

  • Current eco-tourism fee and Big Lagoon ticket arrangements, from official El Nido sources.
  • Any local rules on kayaking, swimming or the number of visitors at the lagoon.
  • Your departure time and meeting point, since hotel pickup is not included.
  • Sea and weather advisories on the morning itself.

Pack sun protection, a dry bag and shoes you can wet; our Philippines packing list covers the rest. If you are still choosing a base, see El Nido vs Coron.
