Excursions and day trips from Soma Bay

Our most recommended things to do in Soma Bay

Soma Bay sits on its own peninsula, forty-five kilometres south of Hurghada, and it is the most self-contained address on this coast. A single road runs out to the headland and ends there; five resorts, a championship golf course and a thalasso spa share the ground, and nothing else does. Guests who come here are usually after quiet, wind or water, and often all three.

The bay's own water is the reason many people never leave it. The reef wall drops away close to shore, the Breakers house reef is one of the better shore dives in Egypt, and Tobia Island — a sandbank offshore with shallow coral heads around it — is a half-day boat trip rather than an expedition. The flat, shallow lagoon on the peninsula's north side is where the kite and windsurf schools put beginners.

For everything inland, Soma Bay's position is quietly an advantage. Safaga is twenty minutes south, and from there the desert road to Luxor is the shortest crossing on the Red Sea coast — about three hours, against four or more from Hurghada. That makes the Valley of the Kings a genuinely comfortable day from here rather than an endurance test, and it is why we run the Luxor trip from this bay more often than any other. Cairo is still best by air out of Hurghada, forty minutes up the road. Closer to home, the Eastern Desert monasteries of St Anthony and St Paul and the Roman quarries at Mons Porphyrites are day trips almost nobody on this coast thinks to ask for.
