Excursions and day trips from Makadi Bay

Our most recommended things to do in Makadi Bay

Makadi Bay is a bay and not a town. Thirty-five kilometres south of Hurghada the road drops into a shallow crescent of resorts set back behind their own beaches, and that is the whole place — no old quarter, no corniche, no shops beyond the hotel arcades. People choose it deliberately: it is calm, the water is protected, and families get a stretch of sand without the traffic and the touts of a resort town.

The trade-off is that everything you might want to see is a drive away, so the pickup time matters more here than it does further north. Hurghada airport and the marinas are about forty minutes up the coast, which is where the boats to Orange Bay and Giftun leave from. Luxor is around four and a half hours each way — doable as one very long day, and far more comfortable split across two with a night by the Nile. For Cairo we almost always put guests on the morning flight rather than the road; the drive is eight hours and eats the day you came for.

Closer in, Makadi's own house reef is genuinely good — a shallow garden that runs straight off the beach, which is why so many people here learn to snorkel and never get on a boat at all. Behind the hotels the desert starts immediately: quad and buggy routes, Bedouin dinners under the stars, and the 4x4 run out to the Eastern Desert. Makadi Water World keeps the children busy on the day nobody wants an early start.
