Excursions and day trips from El Gouna

Our most recommended things to do in El Gouna

El Gouna is not a resort strip with a town behind it — it is a town built on water. Orascom cut a network of lagoons out of the desert 25 kilometres north of Hurghada and laid the hotels, the houses and the restaurants across a set of linked islands, so almost every address here has a waterfront and you cross bridges to get anywhere. Downtown is cobbled and walkable, Abu Tig Marina is where the boats and the evening crowd end up, and the whole place is quiet in a way the bigger resorts are not.

That geography changes what a day trip looks like. Pickups run along the lagoon roads rather than one coastal highway, so we allow a little longer to collect a party staying out towards Mangroovy or the golf course than one in Downtown. Hurghada International is about 30 minutes south, which makes El Gouna one of the easier bases on this coast for a trip that starts with a flight.

Most guests here are combining water with one or two big cultural days. Luxor is a four-hour drive each way — long, but it is the single day that people remember, and the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and Karnak all fit if you leave early. Cairo works better by air: the morning flight out of Hurghada puts you at the pyramids before the worst of the heat and the coaches. Closer to home, Orange Bay and Giftun are a short run down to the Hurghada marinas, and the desert behind El Gouna gives you Bedouin dinners, quad routes and the Eastern Desert monasteries.

El Gouna is also the kite and dive capital of this stretch. Mangroovy has steady side-shore wind most of the year, and the house reefs and offshore sites are reachable without a long boat transfer. If you are here for the water and want one day of Egypt's history, say so when you book and we will build the trip around the wind forecast rather than against it.
