Our most recommended things to do in Munich

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, and its Old Town is compact enough to explore on foot. In a couple of hours you can walk from Marienplatz and the New Town Hall past the twin towers of the Frauenkirche and the Residenz of the Bavarian rulers to the English Garden, where surfers ride a standing wave on the Eisbach. The city's traditional beer halls show you another side of Bavarian life, and a walk from Marienplatz to Königsplatz explains how Munich became the birthplace of the Nazi movement, and who resisted it.

Munich is also a good base for day trips. The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is under an hour away by public transport. To the south, King Ludwig II's Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle lie at the edge of the Alps, and Salzburg, Mozart's city in Austria, is about two hours away by train. If you would rather have a guide to yourselves, a private Old Town walk is shaped around your group.

A few practical notes. Our own Helios guides lead every tour, in English or German. Most tours start at Marienplatz or elsewhere in the centre, and hotel pickup is only offered on the private tour. Bring a passport for Salzburg. Prices shown are estimates and are confirmed when you book.
