Heidelberg sits where the Neckar leaves its wooded valley, with the Old Town along the river and the castle on the hillside above it. Most of what visitors come to see lies within a short walk: the Marktplatz and the Church of the Holy Spirit, the university squares, the Hauptstraße and the Old Bridge. Our Helios guides lead walks through the Old Town and tours up to the castle in English or German, and you can book a private guide for your own group if you prefer to set the pace yourselves.
The castle is the centrepiece. A funicular runs up from Kornmarkt, and our castle tour includes the ride, the courtyard, the Great Barrel, the German Pharmacy Museum and the Great Terrace. From the water the town looks different again: a 50-minute sightseeing cruise passes the Old Bridge and the castle, and a longer trip of about three hours follows the Neckar upstream to Neckarsteinach and its four castles, with drinks on board.
A walk in the morning, the castle after lunch and a cruise in the late afternoon fit comfortably into one day. Boat timetables change with the seasons, so start times are confirmed with your booking. All prices shown are estimates, and the final price is confirmed when you book.
Hand-picked experiences our guests love, chosen by Helios for your time in Germany.
