Chiang Mai is the main city of northern Thailand, founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna kingdom. Its Old City sits inside a square moat, and three of its most important temples are a short walk apart: Wat Chedi Luang with its great stupa, the carved teak hall of Wat Phan Tao and the richly decorated Wat Phra Singh. The city is also one of the best places to learn Thai cooking, starting at a local market and ending with a meal you have made yourself.
The mountains around the city fill the rest of a stay. In the Mae Wang valley you can spend a day at an elephant care centre where the animals are never ridden, chained or made to perform, with a waterfall and bamboo rafting on the same trip. Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain, is a day out with forest trails, pagodas and waterfalls. Chiang Rai, about three hours north, is worth the long day for the White Temple and the Blue Temple, with a group or in a private car.
A few practical notes. Temples expect shoulders and knees to be covered, and their small entrance fees are paid in cash, in baht. Our own local guides lead the tours, in English, and most day trips include hotel pickup in Chiang Mai. Prices shown are estimates and are confirmed when you book.
